Features:
- Supports 650A at 1700V (suitable for 690V-1000V AC systems), enabling high power density in industrial inverters.
- Delivers extremely low conduction and switching losses, which reduces heat sink size and improves overall system efficiency.
- Allows precise monitoring of the module baseplate temperature. This feedback facilitates controlled derating and protects the module from catastrophic thermal runaway.
The FF650R17 2XR8 is designed for the heavy electrical demands of industrial motor drives and power conversion systems. With a collector-emitter voltage of 1700V, it provides a safe margin for applications operating on 690V or 1000V AC grids, absorbing DC-link voltage spikes without failure. The 650A continuous current rating allows a single module to handle approximately 500kW to 1MW of power, depending on the cooling and switching frequency.
The FF650R17 2XR8 utilizes ABB's (previously Infineon) IGBT4 technology. This Trench Field Stop design significantly reduces the saturation voltage (VCEsat) and, more importantly, the dynamic switching losses (Eon and Eoff). Lower switching losses translate directly to higher efficiency and lower thermal stress on the junction. For a motor drive operating at a 4 kHz switching frequency, the reduction in losses compared to older IGBT generations can be 20-30%.
Thermal management is critical for power semiconductors, and the FF650R17 2XR8 simplifies this task with an integrated NTC thermistor located near the IGBT chips. Unlike external sensors placed on a heatsink, this internal NTC tracks the IGBT junction temperature more accurately. The control system can read this resistance value and adjust operation if the temperature approaches critical limits.
The FF650R17 2XR8 ABB IGBT Modules may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond
End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

- Heavy Industry High-Power Drives: Mainly used in metallurgy, steel mill rolling mills, large mine hoists, and conveyor belts.
- Fluid & Process Control: Deployed in large compressors, high-pressure pumps, and large fan systems in chemical and oil pipelines.
- Marine & Offshore Engineering: Applied in high-power variable speed drives for marine thrusters, deck machinery, and drilling platforms.
- Renewable Energy Generation: Commonly found in the inverter stage power units of doubly-fed or full-power wind turbines.
- High Voltage & Low Losses: Features built-in Infineon PrimePACK™ encapsulated IGBTs with a voltage rating of 1700V, specifically designed for 690V industrial power grids. Combined with the 4th generation Trench/Fieldstop (IGBT4) technology, it significantly reduces conduction and switching losses.
- Dual R8 Parallel High Output: Through the 2×R8 dual-frame parallel architecture, it can carry extremely high rated currents (typically above 600A to 1100A), achieving power outputs from hundreds of kilowatts (kW) to megawatt (MW) levels.
- Excellent Thermal Management: The module substrate possesses high thermal conductivity and a design resistant to thermal cycling fatigue, enabling it to withstand frequent load fluctuations and significantly improving the system's Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF).
- ACS800/ACS880 Power Unit Maintenance: When the inverter unit of a high-power variable speed drive (such as the ACS800-104 / ACS880-104 inverter module) experiences aging from long-term operation or a short-circuit fault, this kit serves as the official standard IGBT module replacement for OEM substitution.
- Four-Quadrant Operation (AGU/ISU): In addition to the inverter output stage, this kit is also frequently configured in Active Infeed Units (ISU) to efficiently feed regenerative energy generated during motor deceleration back into the power grid.
