Features:
- Measures shaft vibration and position without physical contact, eliminating wear and tear on the sensor.
- Designed for 24/7 operation in harsh industrial environments. Interchangeable with older 3300 series components.
- Provides a highly linear voltage output (e.g., 200 mV/mil) that is proportional to the gap, enabling accurate monitoring of micron-level movements.
The 24584-03-01 utilizes eddy current technology to measure the distance between the probe tip and the rotating shaft without physical contact. This is critical for high-speed machinery where physical contact would damage the sensor or the shaft. The probe generates a high-frequency magnetic field; as the shaft moves closer or farther, the impedance changes, producing a voltage output directly proportional to the gap.
Designed for critical machinery such as steam turbines and gas compressors, the 24584-03-01 is built to operate 24/7 without failure. It is fully backward compatible with previous 3300 series monitors and Proximitors.
The probe offers exceptional linearity over its standard 2 mm (80 mil) range, typically with a sensitivity of 200 mV/mil. This high sensitivity allows the monitoring system to detect subtle changes in vibration amplitude and phase. For condition monitoring engineers, this precision is essential for identifying early-stage faults like unbalance, misalignment, or rolling element bearing defects before they lead to catastrophic failure.
The 24584-03-01 Bently Nevada Proximity Probe may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond
End-Of-Life (EOL)by the manufacturer (OEM).

- Large steam turbines and water turbines: Used to monitor thermal expansion or differential expansion of the shaft. When machine startup or load changes cause large axial displacements, the standard probe range is insufficient, necessitating the use of a 16mm system.
- Hydraulic power generation units: Monitoring the radial wobble of the turbine main shaft, especially when the shaft diameter is large and the surface is irregular.
- Heavy industrial equipment: Such as large blowers and coal mills for axial positioning monitoring.
- Wide linear measurement range: The 16mm system typically offers a linear measurement range of 4.0 mm (160 mils), twice that of the standard 8mm system (2.0 mm).
- High sensitivity and stability: The standard output sensitivity is typically 3.94 V/mm (100 mV/mil). Although the sensitivity value is relatively small, it maintains excellent linearity when dealing with a wide range of displacements.
- Strong target surface adaptability: The larger probe tip makes it less sensitive to small imperfections on target surfaces (such as shoulders or keyway edges), improving the average stability of the data.
- Differential Expansion Monitoring: During turbine startup, the rotor and casing expand at different rates due to thermal stress. The 24584 probe, installed on the casing, measures the distance from a specific rotor ramp to prevent friction between the rotor and stationary parts.
- Large Axial Displacement Protection: When severe wear of the internal thrust bearings may occur, resulting in axial displacement exceeding 2mm, a 16mm probe is used as a last line of defense to trigger emergency shutdown protection.
- Low-speed oscillation monitoring: In some large machines operating at low speeds, the oscillation amplitude of structural components is relatively large. A 16mm probe can ensure that the signal does not "overflow" into the linear region throughout the entire oscillation cycle.
