Features:
- 32 binary I/O channels with 8 inputs and 8 outputs per connector across two 40-pin connectors.
- Electronic thermal overload protection on binary outputs with automatic shutdown and LED fault indication.
- Dual reset options: CPU background program or illuminated LED key press.
The 6DD1641-0AC0 packs 32 binary I/O channels into a single module, making it ideal for applications where cabinet space is limited. Each of the two 40-pin connectors (X5 and X6) provides 8 inputs and 8 outputs. This high density reduces the number of modules needed for large I/O counts, simplifying system architecture and reducing cost. The L-bus connection ensures fast communication with the SIMADYN D CPU. For drive control systems, power generation plants, and heavy industrial automation, this module provides the I/O capacity needed for binary sensors and actuators.
Binary outputs on the 6DD1641-0AC0 are protected by electronic thermal overload circuitry. If a short circuit or excessive current occurs, the affected output shuts down immediately, switching to an open-circuit condition. This prevents damage to the module's output stages and protects connected field devices such as contactors, solenoids, and indicator lamps. The associated LED key illuminates to indicate which connector has a fault. Unlike fuse-based protection, there is no need to replace fuses—the module resets electronically after the fault is cleared.
After a thermal overload, the 6DD1641-0AC0 requires a reset to restore output operation. Two reset methods are available. First, the CPU module's background program can automatically reset the output using the configured binary output function block. For normal CPU loading, this takes several seconds after the output has cooled down. Second, maintenance personnel can manually reset by pressing the illuminated LED key (S1 for connector X5, S2 for connector X6). This manual option is useful during commissioning or when the CPU is heavily loaded, allowing technicians to restore operation without reprogramming.
The 6DD1641-0AC0 Siemens I/O Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond
End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

- Metal Rolling Systems: Used for high-precision synchronous control of tension and speed in cold/hot rolling mills and wire rod mills in steel mills.
- High-Performance Power-to-Electronic Converters: Used for pulse transmission and signal processing in large DC drives, excitation systems, or static var compensators (SVCs).
- Complex Machine Tools and Printing Equipment: Processes rapidly changing digital signals in applications requiring multi-axis high-speed synchronous operation.
- Paper and Textile Machinery: Controls tension and transmission synchronization in high-speed production lines.
- Rack Requirements: Must be installed in a dedicated 19-inch rack from SIMADYN D (such as the SR series) and communicate with the CPU via a 64-bit backplane bus.
- Operating Temperature: Typically designed to operate in environments from 0°C to +55°C (forced air cooling).
- Protection Rating: The module itself does not have an independent protective enclosure and must be installed in a control cabinet with an appropriate IP protection rating (such as IP54) to prevent dust and moisture.
- Signal Voltage: Typical 24V DC industrial standard level.
- Programming Environment: STRUC G or D7-SYS graphical configuration tools are used. Developers connect digital input/output signals directly to the control algorithm blocks.
- Communication and Integration: Module status can be uploaded to the HMI or a higher-level monitoring system (such as WinCC) via PROFIBUS DP or MPI protocols through the CP module (such as CP50M0).
- Data Updates: Due to sharing the baseboard bus with the CPU module, signal latency is extremely low, ensuring the real-time nature of the control loop.
