Features:
- Adds an independent PROFIBUS DP channel to an S7-400 CPU.
- Supports both DP master and DP device operating roles.
- Keeps the fieldbus connection electrically isolated from the internal electronics.
The IF 964-DP occupies the CPU interface slot and exchanges data through its dual-port memory rather than through a separate external controller.
Device addresses and process-data areas are assigned in the S7 hardware configuration, allowing the same hardware to take either side of a PROFIBUS link.
Network reach depends on the selected bus speed, so the cable plan and transfer rate must be considered together when the segment is configured.
The Siemens 6ES7964-2AA01-0AB0 IF 964-DP PROFIBUS Interface Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

Selecting the bus role
- Master mode: The module coordinates cyclic data exchange with configured DP slaves.
- Device mode: The interface presents assigned input and output areas to an external DP master.
- CPU dependency: The usable station count follows the limits of the installed S7-400 CPU.
- Configuration: The operating role and station parameters are set in the S7 hardware project.
Relating rate to segment length
- Low rate: At 9.6 kbit/s, a segment can extend to 1200m.
- High rate: At 12 Mbit/s, the corresponding segment limit is 100m.
- Intermediate settings: Each supported transmission rate has its own permitted cable distance.
- Planning point: The selected rate therefore determines the physical boundary of the PROFIBUS segment.
Moving process data through the interface
- Shared memory: Dual-port RAM forms the transfer area between the CPU and PROFIBUS processor.
- Input direction: DP input data is made available to the S7 program through assigned address areas.
- Output direction: CPU output data is transferred from the address area to the configured DP station.
- Consistency: The configured data length defines which bytes belong to each device transaction.
Accessing interface functions
- Bus connector: The isolated PROFIBUS port carries the configured fieldbus segment.
- Status review: Interface states can be evaluated during commissioning through the S7 project.
- Parameter storage: The hardware configuration supplies the operating parameters after startup.
- Module identity: The IF 964-DP order number distinguishes this interface from other S7-400 communication modules.
