The ABB SDCS-FEX-2 (and FEX-2A) Field Exciter Board is an integrated component designed for ABB DCS converter systems, combining a power section and control board to deliver precise field excitation for armature converter modules. Its core function is to regulate field current via a fully digital control system: the μ-processor receives input from the power section and control signals (via flat cable X14 from the SDCS-CON-2), then generates firing pulses for the power modules—each consisting of a diode and thyristor wired as a half-controlled bridge—to supply adjustable DC output current to the converter’s field winding. The board automatically selects current ranges (3A to 16A) to optimize resolution based on the required field current, ensuring efficient and accurate excitation control.
Electrical parameters include a single-phase AC input voltage range of 110V (-15%) to 500V (+10%), with AC isolation voltage rated at 600V; DC output current spans 0.3A to 8A for 25A–75A armature converters and 0.3A to 16A for 100A–2000A armature converters. Power loss at rated field current (IF) is ≤40W, and the output IACT is scaled as Uout = 4V * Iact / I lim (with I lim options: 3A, 5A, 7A, 9A, 11A, 13A, 15A, 17A). Terminal X1 accepts wiring with a 4mm² cross-sectional area, and the board operates at the same frequency as the host DCS converter module. It is compatible with DCS converter modules of type C1, C2, and A5 (excluding A6/A7/C4), featuring electrical isolation (600V AC) to prevent cross-interference with other converter components.
Installation requires mounting the SDCS-FEX-2 inside the armature converter module, adjacent to the SDCS-POW-1 electronic power supply, following ABB’s mechanical fit specifications for C1/C2/A5 racks. The board adheres to industrial environmental standards for converter auxiliary components (consistent with DCS series operating conditions), including temperature ranges suited for industrial settings and non-condensing humidity; it complies with standard altitude ratings for indoor industrial installations. Safety is enhanced by its integrated digital control, which ensures precise current regulation and fault monitoring, while the half-controlled bridge design provides robust power delivery with minimal loss. No external power supply is needed, as the board draws control power from the SDCS-CON-2 and input power from the converter’s AC supply.
