Description
The CP-EXPIO (Expansion I/O Board) is a critical component of Honeywell's ComfortPoint Open control platform, engineered to significantly expand the physical input and output capabilities of supported system controllers. For a plant controller like the CP-IPC, up to 15 CP-EXPIO modules can be connected via a single RS485 CP-IO bus, while the CPO-PC-6A controller supports up to 16 modules.

This module offers a versatile mix of 24 integrated I/O points to suit diverse application needs. The CP-EXPIO provides six universal analog inputs that can be configured for 0-10 Vdc, PT1000, or NTC 20K sensors, covering a wide temperature range from -50 to +150 °C with 12-bit resolution. It also includes eight digital inputs, which can function as standard dry contacts or as pulse inputs for energy meter totalization.

Configuration and integration of the CP-EXPIO are streamlined through Honeywell's engineering tools. The module's address on the RS485 bus is set via an onboard HEX switch, allowing for easy physical identification and network configuration from address 1 to 15 (or 0 to 15 for firmware 2.1 and later).

All programming, including adding, deleting, and modifying I/O points, is performed within the ComfortPoint Open Studio software environment.

Built for reliability in commercial environments, the CP-EXPIO operates from a 24 VAC ±20% power supply with a maximum consumption of 15 VA. Its housing is constructed from ABS plastic and is rated for IP20 protection, making it suitable for installation in electrical enclosures.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
What is the maximum number of CP-EXPIO modules I can connect to a single controller, and what is the total I/O capacity?
The maximum number of CP-EXPIO modules depends on the controller model. You can connect up to 15 modules to a CP-IPC controller and up to 16 modules to a CPO-PC-6A controller, all on a single RS485 CP-IO bus. With firmware version 2.1 or later, this allows the system to support a maximum of 256 physical input and output points, providing extensive scalability for large building management projects.
What types of sensors and signals can the analog inputs on the CP-EXPIO accept?
The CP-EXPIO features 8 universal analog inputs that offer versatile connectivity. They can be configured to accept 0-10 Vdc or 2-10 Vdc signals, as well as temperature sensors including PT1000 and NTC 20K probes, covering a measurement range from -50 to +150 °C. These inputs utilize a 12-bit analog-to-digital converter, providing fine resolution for accurate monitoring of analog variables.
What are the specifications for the digital outputs on the CP-EXPIO, and what are they typically used for?
The CP-EXPIO provides 4 digital outputs of the triac type. They are designed to switch 24 VAC loads and are rated for a maximum continuous current of 500 mA with a minimum required load current of 30 mA for reliable operation. These outputs are ideal for controlling HVAC actuators, motorized valves, fan coils, and other low-power AC devices directly from the building management system.
How is the CP-EXPIO module addressed on the network, and how can its firmware be updated?
Each CP-EXPIO module is assigned a unique address on the RS485 bus via an onboard HEX switch. The addressable range is from 1 to 15 (or 0 to 15 for firmware version 2.1 and later). For firmware upgrades, the CP-EXPIO supports easy field updates using Honeywell's ComfortPoint Open Online tool, allowing maintenance personnel to deploy the latest firmware features and improvements without replacing hardware.
