Features:

  • Provides 250Mbps data transfer between Processor and Expansion chassis via UTP cables, supporting distances up to 30m copper or 10km fibre with converters.
  • Supports dual-module active/standby configuration with interlocks preventing both modules from becoming active simultaneously. TMR Processor determines active module based on health status.
  • Three front-panel Healthy LEDs (Channels A, B, C) indicate individual channel status. Steady green = healthy, flashing red = fault. Includes detailed troubleshooting via T8300 chassis board or diagnostic utility.
The T8311 is the critical communication bridge between the TMR Processor Chassis and Expansion Chassis in ICS Triplex Trusted systems. It provides a triplicated Expander Bus that operates at 250Mbps data transfer rate using standard UTP cables, ensuring high-integrity communication for safety-critical applications. The Expander Bus handles all message forwarding from the Controller Chassis IMB to the Expansion Chassis, as well as response messages back to the processor. For system design flexibility, the T8311 supports distances up to 30 meters using TC-301 copper cable, ideal for adjacent cabinet installations.

The T8311 is designed for high-availability systems requiring fault-tolerant operation. Two T8311 modules can be installed in an active/standby pair, providing seamless failover without system interruption. In this configuration, the TMR Processor continuously monitors the health of both modules and determines which should be active based on their condition. When both modules are healthy, active operation defaults to the left-most module by convention. The module includes hardware interlocks that prevent both modules from assuming active mode simultaneously, a critical safety feature that avoids communication conflicts on the Expander Bus.

The T8311 provides extensive diagnostic capabilities through its front-panel indicators and system-level fault reporting. Three Healthy LEDs—one for each TMR channel (A, B, and C)—allow operators to quickly assess module status at a glance. A steady green LED indicates a healthy channel, while a flashing red LED indicates a fault in that specific channel. The troubleshooting guide in the datasheet provides detailed symptom-cause-solution tables for diagnosing issues such as all front panel indicators off, single FCR flashing red, multiple FCR flashing red, or flashing standby indicator. For example, a flashing standby indicator indicates the TMR Processor has detected a fault and switched to the standby module.

The T8311 ICS TRIPLEX Interface Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL)by the manufacturer (OEM).

  • Large-Scale Integrated Control and Safety Systems (ICSS): Manages hundreds of analog and digital safety points spread across multiple cabinets in sprawling oil refineries and ethylene cracker complexes.
  • Distributed Emergency Shutdown Systems (ESD): Aggregates remote emergency trip loops from geographically separated process areas (e.g., wellheads, cracking towers, storage tanks) back to the central safety processors.
  • Global Fire and Gas (F&G) Protection Plants: Connects centralized processing logic to rows of remote expansion chassis holding 16-point and 40-point safety input/output modules across vast production floors.
  • Ambient Temperature: -40°C to +70°C (-40°F to +158°F) operating range under free convection (fanless) cabinet conditions.
  • Storage Temperature: -40°C to +85°C.
  • Relative Humidity: 5% to 95%, non-condensing.
  • Vibration & Shock: Fully tested to survive high-impact low-frequency vibrations caused by nearby heavy rotating machinery (such as massive turbines or high-velocity gas compressors).
  • Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR): The module contains three completely isolated Fault Containment Regions (FCR A, B, and C), tracking separate processing paths from the backplane to the expansion ports.
  • 2-out-of-3 (2oo3) Hardware Voting: All incoming and outgoing chassis packets undergo continuous 2oo3 voting matrices at the hardware layer.
  • High-Bandwidth Inter-Chassis Bus: Establishes point-to-point links over standard shielded twisted-pair (STP) cables at a blinding deterministic speed of 250 Mbps.
Description
The T8311 is a Trusted TMR Expander Interface Module designed to connect the TMR Processor Chassis to Expansion Chassis in ICS Triplex safety systems. It operates in either Active or Standby mode, with the TMR Processor controlling which module assumes active operation.

Communication capabilities of the T8311 include the Expander Bus at 250Mbps data rate via UTP cables, supporting distances up to 30m using TC-301 copper cable or 10km with fibre converters. The T8311 also interfaces with the triplicated Inter-Module Bus (IMB) at up to 12.5Mbps, handling 8-bit bi-directional data, control signals, system watchdog, power fail warnings, slot position, and chassis ID.

Front panel indicators on the T8311 include three Healthy LEDs (one per channel: A, B, C) showing steady green for healthy or flashing red for fault. An Active LED (green) indicates Active mode, while a Standby LED (green) indicates Standby mode. Operating temperature range is -5°C to +60°C, with non-operating range of -25°C to +70°C. Operating humidity is 5-95% RH.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
What is the primary function of T8311 in a Trusted system?
The T8311 provides communication between the TMR Processor Chassis and Expansion Chassis. It forwards messages from the Controller Chassis IMB to the Expander Bus and response messages back, enabling system expansion.
How does T8311 handle active/standby redundancy?
Two T8311 modules can be installed in active/standby configuration. The TMR Processor determines which module is active based on health status. Interlocks prevent both modules from becoming active simultaneously.
What distances can T8311 support for expansion communication?
Using TC-301 copper cable, maximum distance is 30m. With fibre optic converters, distance extends to 10km, allowing remote placement of expansion chassis from the processor chassis.
What do the three Healthy LEDs on T8311 indicate?
The three LEDs correspond to Channels A, B, and C of the TMR architecture. Steady green indicates a healthy channel; flashing red indicates a fault in that specific channel. The module continues operation with remaining healthy channels.
