Features:
- 4 kVRMS Galvanic Isolation with High Ground Noise Rejection
- Intrinsic Safety Barrier Replacement – No External Zener Diodes
- Universal Compatibility with Legacy Vibro-Meter Sensors
The Vibro-Meter GSI 124 provides a robust 4 kVRMS isolation barrier between the sensor field wiring and the monitoring electronics. This eliminates ground loops caused by differing ground potentials across long distances (up to 1,000 m) and rejects frame voltage interference (≥55 dB), ensuring clean, drift-free dynamic signals even in electrically noisy environments such as variable frequency drive (VFD) installations.
Certified for hazardous area operation (ATEX Ex ib, cCSAus Class I Div 1), the Vibro-Meter GSI 124 integrates energy limiting directly into the isolation unit. This eliminates the need for external Zener barriers, reducing panel space, wiring complexity, and maintenance points. The Ex-version (Option A2) provides a maximum allowable load capacitance of 99 nF, complying with intrinsic safety loop requirements for gas groups IIC.
The Vibro-Meter GSI 124 is factory-configured with selectable transfer functions (Options B1/B2 for IPC/CE sensors at 1 V/mA sensitivity; Option B3 for IQS proximity probes at 3.2 V/mA sensitivity). It directly replaces GSI 122, GSI 123, and GSI 130 without rewiring the existing terminal blocks. This makes it the ideal drop-in upgrade for modernization projects on turbines, compressors, and pumps where original parts are obsolete.
The GSI 124 Vibro-Meter Galvanic Separation Unit may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

- Turbomachinery Protection in Refineries & LNG Plants:The Vibro-Meter GSI 124 isolates vibration and position signals from centrifugal compressors, gas turbines, and expanders located in Ex Zone 1/2 areas. It enables the central monitoring rack (e.g., VM600) to be placed up to 1,000 meters away in a safe control room, eliminating the cost of explosion-proof enclosures for the monitoring electronics.
- Offshore Platforms & FPSOs:In saltwater environments with floating ground potentials, the Vibro-Meter GSI 124 provides 4 kVRMS isolation to break galvanic corrosion paths and reject 50/60 Hz common-mode currents induced by variable frequency drives on pumps and compressors.
- Power Generation – Steam & Hydro Turbines:For hydroelectric plants where sensors are located in submerged or high-humidity pits (draft tubes, turbine housings), the Vibro-Meter GSI 124 supports long cable runs (up to 500 m) while maintaining shaft relative vibration and thrust position signal integrity. It also replaces obsolete GSI 122 units in legacy turbine supervisory systems.
- Chemical Processing – Reactors & Agitators:The Vibro-Meter GSI 124 (Ex version) allows continuous vibration monitoring of stirred tank reactors and high-speed agitators in ATEX Zone 1 classified areas. Its low output impedance (≤1 Ω) drives signals through crowded junction boxes without crosstalk interference from adjacent 4-20 mA loops.
- Hazardous Area Compatibility (Ex ib):The Vibro-Meter GSI 124 (Option A2) is certified for installation in safe areas or Zone 2 while protecting sensors located in Zone 0/1. It limits fault energy to ≤ 1.2 W, complying with intrinsic safety entity parameters for IIC gas groups (hydrogen, acetylene).
- Wide Ambient Temperature Range for Unconditioned Shelters:Rated from 0°C to +70°C operation and -20°C to +85°C storage, the Vibro-Meter GSI 124 is suitable for non-air-conditioned control cabinets in deserts, tropics, and temperate climates. Use external heating below 0°C.
- Humidity & Condensation Resistance:The Vibro-Meter GSI 124 operates at up to 90% relative humidity (non-condensing). For applications with frequent thermal cycling (e.g., outdoor cabinets in monsoon climates), conformal coating is not standard; install a cabinet breather or heater to prevent condensation on the screw terminals.
- Mechanical Ruggedness for High Vibration Areas:Withstands 6 g peak shock (11 ms half-sine) and 1 g vibration (5-35 Hz). The Vibro-Meter GSI 124 can be mounted directly on a DIN rail inside a turbine hall or compressor skid without requiring shock-absorbing mounts.
- High-Frequency Dynamic Signal Preservation (0-20 kHz):The Vibro-Meter GSI 124 passes AC components from IEPE accelerometers and dynamic pressure sensors up to 20 kHz with less than 0.2% linearity error. This ensures gearmesh frequencies, blade pass vibrations, and combustion dynamics are not attenuated by the isolation stage.
- Long-Distance Transmission with Current Mode:When used with Vibro-Meter CE series accelerometers (current output) or IPC707 in current mode, the Vibro-Meter GSI 124 supports cable lengths up to 1,000 meters while maintaining a 1 kHz bandwidth for ISO 20816-compliant protection. For 305 meters (1,000 ft, API 670 standard), the bandwidth extends to >5 kHz.
- Ground Loop Elimination & Common Mode Rejection:The Vibro-Meter GSI 124 provides >55 dB ground noise rejection by breaking the conductive path between the sensor ground (machine frame) and the monitoring system ground (control room earth). This eliminates 50/60 Hz hum and high-frequency switching noise from VFDs without requiring differential inputs on the monitor.
- Drop-in Replacement for Legacy GSI 122/123/130:The Vibro-Meter GSI 124 matches the pinout, mounting footprint, and electrical transfer functions of older generations. Upgrading does not require reprogramming the IPC707 or IQS450 signal conditioners, reducing modernization project risk and outage time to less than 30 minutes per channel.
