Features:
- Provides faster torque response (<1 ms) than traditional vector control; ±0.1% speed accuracy without encoder; precise control for demanding machinery.
- Safety function meets SIL 3 (IEC 61508) and PL e (ISO 13849‑1); no external safety relay needed for basic STO; simplifies machine safety design.
- ZCU‑14 control unit with I/O slots; supports multiple fieldbus adapter modules.
The ACS880-M04-014A-5 uses ABB’s patented Direct Torque Control (DTC) algorithm. Unlike traditional PWM vector control that relies on a modulator and fixed switching patterns, DTC directly controls motor torque and flux based on real-time measurements of two phase currents and DC link voltage. It computes optimal switching states every 25 microseconds. The result is torque response under 1 millisecond (typical <0.5 ms) – five times faster than traditional drives. Speed accuracy is ±0.1% without an encoder and ±0.01% with an encoder.
Machine safety is a critical requirement for industrial machinery. The ACS880-M04-014A-5 integrates Safe Torque Off (STO) as a standard feature. STO prevents the motor from generating torque that could cause hazardous movement. When the safety signal is de‑energized (open circuit), the drive’s gate drive circuit is disabled, preventing the IGBTs from switching. This meets SIL 3 (IEC 61508) and PL e (ISO 13849‑1) ratings without external safety relays for basic STO applications.
The ACS880-M04-014A-5 features a modular hardware architecture. The power module contains the IGBT bridge, DC link, and cooling. The ZCU‑14 control unit mounts directly onto the power module and contains the processor, I/O, and communication interfaces. The control unit has basic digital and analog I/O (easily accessible on plug‑in terminals) plus two slots for optional I/O modules or fieldbus adapters. Available fieldbus adapters include FENA‑11 (EtherNet/IP, Modbus/TCP, PROFINET IO), FPBA‑01 (PROFIBUS DP), FSCA‑01 (Modbus/RTU), FDNA‑01 (DeviceNet), and FECA‑01 (EtherCAT).
The ACS880-M04-014A-5 ABB Machinery Drive may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond
End-Of-Life (EOL)by the manufacturer (OEM).

- Material Handling: Automated storage/retrieval systems (AS/RS), stackers, conveyors, and high-speed elevators.
- Hoisting & Cranes: Control of trolley travel and hoisting units requiring smooth torque transitions.
- Packaging & Processing: Labeling machines, film wrappers, and cutters that demand precise speed and position synchronization.
- Textile & Woodworking: Multi-axis machines requiring constant tension control or high-speed spindle operations.
- Primary Control Program: Pre-loaded with ABB’s high-end DTC (Direct Torque Control), providing exceptional motor control without the need for an encoder in many cases.
- Memory Unit (ZMU): All firmware, parameter settings, and application programs are stored on a removable ZMU memory card. If a drive fails, you can move the card to a new unit to restore the system instantly without a PC.
- Firmware Updates: Managed via Drive Composer Pro software. Updates are used to unlock new features, enhance safety functions, or optimize performance for specialized motor types (like SynRM).
- Entry version: Free tool for basic startup, parameter setting, and fault logging.
- Pro version: Adds graphical control diagrams, advanced data logging, and multi-drive networking via Ethernet.
- Adaptive Programming: A built-in, block-based programming environment available in the standard firmware. It allows users to create simple logic (like timers or custom I/O mapping) without external software.
- IEC 61131-3 Programming: For complex tasks, the drive can be programmed using CODESYS. This turns the drive into a controller, potentially eliminating the need for an external PLC.
