Features:

  • Consolidates the functions of up to three independent MEM86-192K memory boards into one DRC rack module.
  • Supports eighteen software-configurable 32 KB memory groups for flexible address mapping.
  • Protects stored program data through battery-backed SRAM and Power Fail memory inhibition.
ABB MEM86-3*192K R3R1R3 provides a reliable memory platform for Digital Reference Controller applications where firmware, application storage, and backup capability are required. By replacing three separate memory boards with a single module, it simplifies cabinet layout and reduces the number of installed components. This configuration helps improve maintenance efficiency while supporting dependable controller performance.

The board offers flexible memory organization to accommodate different control system requirements. Firmware can be stored in EPROM, application programs in SRAM, and backup information in EEPROM. Software-controlled mapping enables individual memory groups to be assigned as needed, making the board adaptable to various DRC configurations without hardware modifications.

ABB MEM86-3*192K R3R1R3 is well suited for industrial environments that require stable program retention and reliable operation. The onboard rechargeable Ni-Cd battery maintains SRAM contents during power interruptions, while the /PWF protection mechanism prevents memory access during abnormal power conditions. Operating from 5 VDC with an operating temperature range of 0°C to +55°C and storage temperatures down to -40°C, the board supports dependable long-term use in industrial automation systems.

The MEM86-3*192K R3R1R3 ABB Memory Board may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

Description
ABB MEM86-3*192K R3R1R3 memory board is a general-purpose memory board developed for installation in the Digital Reference Controller (DRC) rack. It replaces as many as three independent MEM86-192K memory boards, reducing hardware requirements while providing a centralized memory solution. The module supports firmware, application storage, and backup memory within one compact assembly.

The memory architecture consists of 512 KB SRAM divided into three 192K memory blocks. Internally, the board contains eighteen individually mapped 32 KB memory groups whose address areas are assigned by software. Eighteen map registers located in the I/O address space allow flexible memory allocation, while three independent microswitch-controlled I/O address areas enable the board to function as a replacement for three separate memory boards.

Each mapped memory area uses two memory circuits to provide a 16-bit word length. Every circuit pair manages 64 KB of memory, equivalent to two memory groups, with adjacent memory areas separated by the most significant address bit (A14). Memory map addresses that are placed in succession must use different A14 states to prevent two memory maps from selecting the same circuit.

ABB MEM86-3*192K R3R1R3 includes battery-backed low-power CMOS SRAM for dependable program retention. Memory operation is automatically inhibited whenever the bus Power Fail (/PWF) signal is not in the active state, preventing unwanted memory access during power disturbances. An onboard Ni-Cd battery charges whenever power is applied and maintains SRAM contents during power interruptions. The available retention time depends mainly on battery age and ambient temperature, with lower temperatures helping reduce battery self-discharge.
