Overview Manuals Load Planning Power Checks Wiring Control Product Applications

Features:

  • 90–146 V DC input for 125 V DC control-power systems
  • 5 A at 5 V DC and 0.96 A at 24 V DC backplane capacity
  • Separate 24 V DC, 200 mA user-power connection
The 1746-P5 powers one SLC 500 chassis from a nominal 125 V DC source while keeping the processor and module rails regulated.

Selection is a two-rail load decision: both the 5 V and 24 V demand must remain within the published limits.

Field acceptance also depends on source polarity, protection, grounding, wiring restoration, and recovery of any circuits using the user-power terminals.

The 1746-P5 Allen-Bradley may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

  • Sum every module load separately at 5 V DC and 24 V DC.
  • Include processor, communication, specialty, and local I/O modules.
  • Reserve margin for the approved final chassis configuration.
  • Verify 90–146 V DC at the supply terminals with correct polarity.
  • Inspect branch protection, grounding, and connector seating.
  • Do not bypass the chassis or supply protective devices.
  • Label the input, protective-earth, and 24 V user-power conductors.
  • Confirm whether external devices depend on the 200 mA user output.
  • Re-energize only after enclosure and terminal checks are complete.
  • SLC 500 chassis powered from nominal 125 V DC
  • Legacy controller maintenance with verified module loads
  • Replacement projects retaining documented SLC wiring
Description
Allen-Bradley 1746-P5 is an SLC 500 chassis power supply for installations with a 125 V DC source. It converts a 90–146 V DC input into the regulated backplane rails required by the processor, I/O, and specialty modules in one local chassis.

1746-P5 provides up to 5 A at 5 V DC and 0.96 A at 24 V DC for the backplane, with a separate 24 V DC user-power connection rated 200 mA. Its 85 VA input requirement, 20 A inrush, grounding, branch protection, and module load must be included in panel calculations.

Replacement approval for 1746-P5 should reproduce the installed chassis load, input polarity and protection, user-power wiring, grounding, and shutdown procedure. A compatible mounting position does not establish that another SLC supply has the same DC input range or power capacity.

Technical notes
Before replacing 1746-P5, calculate the chassis demand at both 5 V DC and 24 V DC, identify any user-power load, and verify the 90–146 V DC source, polarity, grounding, branch protection, and disconnect. The internal fuse is soldered; investigate the cause of a failed supply rather than field-replacing that fuse.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
Can 1746-P5 replace an AC-input SLC power supply?
No. This model requires a 90–146 V DC source. Verify the incoming supply, polarity, branch protection, chassis load, and user-power wiring before replacement.
What should be checked when a chassis with 1746-P5 remains dark after replacement?
Verify disconnect state, source voltage at the input terminals, polarity, branch protection, grounding, connector seating, and chassis load. Isolate downstream faults before condemning the new supply.
How is the correct power capacity for 1746-P5 confirmed?
Add the 5 V and 24 V requirements of every installed processor, I/O, and specialty module and compare both totals with the supply limits, including any 24 V user-power load.
Can the internal fuse in 1746-P5 be replaced during field service?
The documented fuse is soldered. Do not treat it as a routine field-replaceable part; identify the cause of failure and replace or service the supply through an approved process.
Which records reduce outage risk before removing 1746-P5?
Photograph input and user-power wiring, record polarity and measured source voltage, export the chassis inventory, calculate both backplane loads, and note grounding and branch-protection details.
Why does 1746-P5 power up and then drop out under load?
Measure source voltage during startup, check polarity, inrush capability, branch protection, loose terminals, shorted user-power circuits, and both backplane load totals. An unloaded voltage check does not prove the supply can start the configured chassis.
