More Information

Overview Manuals ControlNet Side H1 Segments Commissioning Application
  • Links ControlNet with one or two FOUNDATION Fieldbus H1 networks
  • Supports closed-loop control and field-device configuration
  • Provides redundant ControlNet media interfaces

1788-CN2FF translates scheduled controller data into the H1 function-block exchanges used by field instruments.

Two independent fieldbus channels let separate H1 segments share one ControlNet-side linking device while retaining their own segment wiring and commissioning records.

Its reset-switch behavior is operationally important because leaving the switches in the factory position can erase configuration after power interruption.

Availability, condition, price, and shipping time for 1788-CN2FF are confirmed during quotation.

  • Assign 1788-CN2FF a unique ControlNet node address from 1 through 99
  • Use BNC A and B for one single or redundant ControlNet network, not two separate networks
  • Use the RJ-45 NAP only temporarily and keep its connection cable at 30 m or less
  • Engineer power conditioning and terminators per segment
  • Observe H1 polarity and shield practice
  • Retain device and function-block assignments
  • Return reset switches to NORMAL before configuration
  • Download and verify the saved linking-device database
  • Prove field values and control paths before release
  • ControlNet integration of FOUNDATION Fieldbus instruments
  • Closed-loop process control through H1 function blocks
  • Configuration access for analog and discrete field devices
Description
Allen-Bradley 1788-CN2FF is a linking device that transfers control and configuration data between ControlNet and as many as two FOUNDATION Fieldbus H1 channels.

Its dual ControlNet BNC interfaces support redundant media, while the H1 side exposes field-device function-block data for analog input, analog output, discrete input, and discrete output applications.

Commissioning requires the reset switches to be returned to NORMAL, a unique ControlNet node address, correct H1 power conditioning and terminators, verified fieldbus polarity, and a saved configuration before the process loop is released.

Technical notes
1788-CN2FF replacement requires preserving ControlNet node and media paths, both H1 segment designs, reset-switch position, power conditioning, terminators, polarity, firmware, and saved fieldbus configuration; mismatches can interrupt process loops.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
What must be saved before replacing Allen-Bradley 1788-CN2FF?
Save the linking-device configuration, ControlNet node and schedule information, both H1 channel designs, field-device assignments, function-block settings, and loop commissioning records.
Why can Allen-Bradley 1788-CN2FF lose its configuration after a power cycle?
The factory reset switches ship in the ON position. After the documented initial reset, return them to OFF or NORMAL before loading the application configuration.
Can Allen-Bradley 1788-CN2FF power any number of H1 devices?
No. Device count and power availability must be engineered per segment; the installation guide recommends eight devices per H1 port and sixteen total for the linking device.
How should redundant ControlNet media be connected to Allen-Bradley 1788-CN2FF?
Connect the two BNC channels according to the redundant ControlNet design, preserve A/B paths and node address, and verify both channels before commissioning H1 control.
What causes FOUNDATION Fieldbus devices to remain offline behind Allen-Bradley 1788-CN2FF?
Check H1 polarity, segment power conditioning, terminators, cable shield practice, device addresses, configuration download, and whether the intended H1 channel is enabled.
Can Allen-Bradley 1788-CN2FF be removed while powered?
No. Follow the official removal procedure and isolate module power before changing switches, wiring, or the DIN-rail assembly.
Is Allen-Bradley 1788-CN2FF interchangeable with newer redundant linking devices?
Not automatically. ControlNet media, H1 channel design, configuration tools, redundancy behavior, and controller integration must be compared by engineering before migration.
