More Information

Overview Manuals Addressing Cabling Diagnostics Application
  • Nonredundant coax ControlNet interface using channel A
  • Rotary node-address selection with host-assigned address option
  • Network-keeper capability and independent status indicators

1788-CNC is an Allen-Bradley ControlNet daughtercard designed for compatible FlexLogix, DriveLogix, and supported daughtercard hosts.

Its coax interface connects through an approved tap and provides module, I/O, and network-status information together with temporary NAP programming access.

Before installation or replacement, verify Series, firmware, host support, node address, channel-A connection, tap, cable, termination, network schedule, and keeper records.

Availability, condition, price, and shipping time for 1788-CNC are confirmed during quotation.

  • Two rotary switches select network addresses 01 through 99
  • Address 00 permits a compatible host to provide the node address
  • Switch settings are read during host initialization
  • Channel A BNC connects to the operating network through an approved coax tap
  • ControlNet trunk segments require the documented coax media and terminators
  • The 1786-CP connection is limited to temporary programming-terminal access
  • Module Status identifies host power, reset, and daughtercard operating faults
  • I/O Status reports connection and scheduled-I/O condition
  • Channel A Network Status distinguishes normal traffic, wiring, address, and keeper issues
  • FlexLogix controller communication on nonredundant coax ControlNet networks
  • DriveLogix controller communication with scheduled ControlNet I/O and messaging
  • ControlNet network access for other host devices that implement the supported daughtercard interface

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
Can Allen-Bradley 1788-CNC replace a 1788-CNCR in a redundant-media ControlNet installation?
No. 1788-CNC is the nonredundant coax version and uses channel A. A system designed for redundant A/B media requires hardware and configuration that preserve both channels.
Why does Allen-Bradley 1788-CNC use node address 00 differently from addresses 01 through 99?
Addresses 01–99 are selected by the rotary switches. Setting 00 delegates address assignment to the host, so the host documentation and saved project must support that method.
Can Allen-Bradley 1788-CNC be inserted into any daughtercard connector with the same physical outline?
No. Rockwell defines a common daughtercard interface, but the host must explicitly support the ControlNet card, its power requirement, mechanical retention, firmware, and software profile.
Why should keeper information be reviewed before updating Allen-Bradley 1788-CNC firmware?
The daughtercard can act as the network keeper. Preserve the ControlNet schedule and keeper configuration so a firmware or hardware change does not leave the network without valid keeper data.
Can the Network Access Port on Allen-Bradley 1788-CNC be used as permanent ControlNet trunk wiring?
No. Rockwell documents the NAP and 1786-CP for temporary programming access. The operating network connection uses an approved ControlNet coax tap at the BNC interface.
Which ControlNet connector should be active on Allen-Bradley 1788-CNC?
Use channel A for the nonredundant 1788-CNC. The second channel shown on redundant models must not be assumed to exist or be configurable on this catalog number.
What does an alternating red/green network indicator on Allen-Bradley 1788-CNC suggest?
Rockwell's indicator table associates alternating states with network configuration or keeper conditions. Check node uniqueness, scheduled network data, keeper availability, cabling, taps, and terminators.
