More Information

Overview Manuals Serial Communication System Capacity Memory and Replacement Application
  • The controller occupies the leftmost position in the CompactLogix system
  • 1769-L31 must remain within four module positions of the system power supply
  • Channel 0 is isolated, while Channel 1 is nonisolated and may require an external isolator

1769-L31 system planning requires the controller to be installed as the leftmost module, with only one controller used in each CompactLogix system.

Each I/O bank requires its own power supply, and the communication bus must be terminated with the appropriate 1769-ECR right end cap or 1769-ECL left end cap.

When nonisolated Channel 1 connects to equipment outside the enclosure, Rockwell Automation recommends considering an interface converter such as 1761-NET-AIC and using the specified serial cable.

Availability, condition, price, and shipping time for 1769-L31 are confirmed during quotation.

  • Channel 0 supports isolated DF1, DH-485, or ASCII communication
  • Channel 1 supports nonisolated DF1 or DH-485 communication
  • Record both channel configurations before controller replacement
  • The controller forms the leftmost module in the first CompactLogix bank
  • Local I/O can be distributed across three correctly powered banks
  • Expansion cables and the final end-cap terminator must follow the saved project layout
  • A 1784-CF128 CompactFlash card can provide nonvolatile project storage
  • The 1769-BA battery supports controller memory retention
  • Rockwell identifies 1769-L32E as a direct replacement requiring an engineered migration
  • Compact machine control with local 1769 Compact I/O
  • Serial DF1, DH-485, or ASCII device integration
  • Multi-bank CompactLogix systems requiring up to 16 local I/O modules
Description
1769-L31 is a Series A CompactLogix controller designed to coordinate processor execution, local Compact I/O, and serial communication within a modular control system.

The controller provides 512 KB of user memory and two RS-232 communication channels. Channel 0 is electrically isolated, while Channel 1 is nonisolated. Its local architecture supports up to 16 connected 1769 I/O modules arranged across as many as three I/O banks.

An optional 1784-CF128 CompactFlash card can provide nonvolatile storage, and the specified 1769-BA battery supports controller memory retention. Each I/O bank requires its own power supply and the appropriate 1769-ECR or 1769-ECL end cap.

Before replacing a 1769-L31, confirm the hardware series, compatible firmware and RSLogix 5000 revision, serial-channel settings, saved controller project, battery and CompactFlash contents, I/O-bank arrangement, power-supply spacing, and end-cap configuration.

Technical notes
1769-L31 can restore an application from 1784-CF128 only when the controller type and firmware agree with the stored image; also preserve both RS-232 channel modes, or startup communication may fail.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
Can an existing 1769-L31 project be moved directly to the listed replacement controller?
Not as a blind swap. Although Rockwell lists 1769-L32E as the direct replacement, the project conversion, Ethernet integration, firmware, serial communications, I/O layout, and panel changes must be reviewed before migration.
How can controller memory be protected while replacing the battery in 1769-L31?
Follow the powered-controller battery procedure in the installation instructions, use only the specified 1769-BA assembly, and maintain a current project backup before disconnecting the old battery.
Can 1769-L31 use CompactFlash nonvolatile memory?
Yes. The controller supports an optional 1784-CF128 CompactFlash card for project backup, but card contents, controller type, and firmware must match before a restore.
Are both RS-232 ports on 1769-L31 identical?
No. Channel 0 supports DF1, DH-485, or ASCII and is isolated, while Channel 1 supports DF1 or DH-485 and is not isolated from the system.
What should be checked if a serial device stops communicating after replacing 1769-L31?
Confirm that the device is connected to the intended channel, then restore the documented DF1, DH-485, or ASCII settings, isolation arrangement, cable wiring, and baud configuration for that channel.
Can 1769-L31 be removed while the CompactLogix system is powered?
No. The official installation instructions state that the controller is not designed for removal and insertion under power, so isolate power before replacement.
What should be preserved before replacing 1769-L31?
Back up the project and document firmware, controller series, both serial-channel configurations, I/O arrangement, CompactFlash contents, battery condition, and operating mode before removal.
