Features:

  • Interface Between the Digital Control System and Field Output Devices via POINT I/O™ Rack Backplane
  • Combines Capability of Protected Output Switching with Real-Time Status Indication
  • Operates in Conjunction with DeviceNet, PROFIBUS, ControlNet, and Ethernet Adapters
The 1734-OB4E Allen-Bradley 1734 POINT I/O Protected Output Module operates as a discrete digital output module within a 1734 POINT I/O™ rack, providing reliable protected switching for up to four output channels. It continuously drives field loads while incorporating built-in output protection that safeguards each channel against electrical faults such as short circuits and overloads. Seamless integration is standard with the 1734-OB4E, and using compatible adapters allows flexible deployment across multiple communication networks including DeviceNet, PROFIBUS, ControlNet, and Ethernet. The 1734-OB4E incorporates universal adapter compatibility within the POINT I/O™ system and has made improvements in diagnostic visibility over previous output module designs through dedicated status LED indicators.

The 1734-OB4E provides essential output functions common to discrete control applications, and is a critical component of the control path, directly affecting the proper, normal operation of field devices connected to the overall automation system. One or more 1734-OB4E modules are required per POINT I/O™ rack depending on the desired number of output channels. The 1734-OB4E occupies a compact single slot in the rack and can be located in any standard I/O slot position alongside other POINT I/O™ modules.

For comprehensive system monitoring, the 1734-OB4E module provides dedicated status indication for each output channel and module/network health. In addition to standard output operation, the 1734-OB4E also performs real-time fault detection. The 1734-OB4E output protection mechanism executes fault isolation using internal circuitry specified in the module specifications. Using this method, the 1734-OB4E continually monitors the health of each output. If the system detects that an output channel is experiencing a fault condition (outside configured protection thresholds), it will automatically indicate the fault via the red output fault LED and report the status to the connected network adapter for system-level diagnostics.

The 1734-OB4E Allen-Bradley Protected Output Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

Description
The Allen-Bradley 1734-OB4E is a 1734 POINT I/O Protected Output Module that provides four channels of 24V DC sourced outputs. As a Series C module, the 1734-OB4E is highly versatile, supporting integration with DeviceNet and PROFIBUS adapters. For systems utilizing RSLogix 5000 software (version 11 or higher), the 1734-OB4E also offers expanded compatibility with ControlNet and EtherNet/IP adapters, allowing it to fit seamlessly into diverse industrial network architectures.

This 1734-OB4E module is specifically designed to handle high-risk electrical environments where field-side wiring errors or component failures could potentially damage the control system. By providing built-in electronic protection, the 1734-OB4E solves the problem of costly downtime caused by short circuits or overcurrent conditions. In a real-world application, such as controlling small DC solenoids or actuators on a high-speed packaging line, the 1734-OB4E acts as a safeguard; if a solenoid fails and shorts out, the 1734-OB4E protects the rest of the I/O rack from the fault, ensuring that only the affected channel is disabled.

Monitoring the 1734-OB4E is straightforward due to its comprehensive diagnostic indicators located on the front panel. The 1734-OB4E features four yellow LEDs to indicate the status of each output, four red LEDs to signal specific output faults, and two bicolor green/red LEDs for overall module and network status. These visual cues on the 1734-OB4E allow maintenance teams to quickly identify whether a problem is a simple wiring fault or a broader communication issue, significantly reducing troubleshooting time in complex automated systems.
