More Information

Overview Manuals Loop Load Match External Power Fault Diagnosis Product Applications

Features:

  • Four current outputs: controls independent analog field loops
  • 14-bit conversion: provides defined current resolution and response
  • External supply option: can reduce 24 V DC demand on the SLC backplane
1746-NO4I serves applications that need four current-output channels without occupying multiple SLC slots.

Its engineering value is the combination of defined loop resolution, isolation, and a selectable power source.

A correct replacement therefore depends on the channel scaling and supply topology as much as the catalog number.
Apter Power can review 1746-NO4I Series identity, loop requirements, terminal hardware, condition, official records, and quotation scope.

  • Load boundary: keep every output loop within the documented resistance range
  • Command mapping: preserve the processor word and engineering-unit scaling for each channel
  • Field proof: compare a known command with measured loop current before reconnecting the final device
  • Supply source: identify whether chassis or external 24 V DC powers the output circuitry
  • Switch position: match the hardware selection to the approved panel drawing
  • Chassis impact: recalculate 24 V DC loading when the supply method changes
  • Zero-current case: separate missing commands from an open loop or absent field supply
  • Range error: compare raw output words with the configured engineering scale
  • Noise symptom: inspect shield termination and loop routing before changing program filters
  • Valve positioning: issue documented current commands to matched process actuators
  • Drive reference: provide a 0–20 mA speed or torque command where supported
  • Analog setpoint delivery: send independent current references to four compatible field devices
Description
Four independent current commands are provided by 1746-NO4I for an SLC 500 chassis. The module converts processor output words into 0–20 mA field signals, with a documented 21 mA full-scale value for the analog output path.

A 14-bit R-2R converter gives 1746-NO4I a resolution of 2.56348 μA per LSB and a 2.5 ms step response. That combination supports valve positioners, drives, and other current-controlled devices when the loop load remains within the published range.

Installation of 1746-NO4I should retain the channel map, scaling, loop supply arrangement, 1746-RT28 terminal block, and shielded field wiring. The optional external 24 V DC supply changes chassis loading, so the backplane calculation must match the actual power-switch position.

Technical notes
1746-NO4I can use either chassis 24 V DC or an external 24 V DC source; that selection changes the module's backplane demand. An incorrect power-switch position can invalidate the chassis calculation, so match the installed supply arrangement before restoring loop commands and test each channel with a known load.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
Why can 1746-NO4I show a valid output word while the field loop remains at zero current?
A valid processor word does not prove loop continuity. Separate an open load, missing field supply, wrong power-source switch position, and terminal wiring before changing the program.
When should an external 24 V DC source be used with 1746-NO4I?
Use it when the approved chassis power calculation requires the module's 24 V DC demand to be removed from the backplane. The source and hardware switch must match the panel design.
What makes one 1746-NO4I channel reach full scale before the others?
Start with that channel's scaling word and connected resistance. A mismatched engineering range or excessive loop load can limit the delivered current without affecting neighboring channels.
How should a replacement 1746-NO4I be accepted before a valve is returned to automatic control?
Drive the channel through low, midpoint, and high commands into a known load, compare measured current with the expected value, and then verify the actual valve response.
Which records reduce wiring errors when the 1746-NO4I terminal block is moved?
A conductor-by-conductor channel map and the documented shield/common arrangement are the most useful records. Retain the 1746-RT28 keying and loop supply identity with that map.
Can 1746-NO4I be exchanged with a voltage-output SLC module without design changes?
No equivalence is established. Current and voltage outputs use different field interfaces, scaling, loads, and acceptance tests, so the connected devices and project configuration require separate engineering review.
