More Information

Overview Manuals Sourcing Load Design Protection Boundary Output Acceptance Product Applications

Features:

  • Sixteen sourcing outputs: switches positive DC power to compatible loads
  • 10–50 V DC field range: covers documented industrial output circuits
  • External protection required: the standard module has no electronic short-circuit protection
1746-OB16 groups sixteen solid-state sourcing outputs in a modular SLC 500 format.

Its useful load capacity depends on point current, module total, ambient temperature, and external protection.

The distinction from electronically protected catalog variants must remain visible during selection and replacement.

  • Load polarity: confirm each field device is compatible with a sourcing PLC output
  • Current schedule: total point and module loads at the real ambient temperature
  • Minimum current: verify small indicator or relay loads meet the documented threshold
  • External device: provide coordinated overcurrent protection outside the module
  • Inductive energy: apply suppression to solenoids, relays, and contactors as documented
  • Failure containment: separate vulnerable branches where one short must not disable unrelated loads
  • Safe-state test: observe loads during controller and field-power removal
  • Point proof: command each output and measure the intended device response
  • Thermal observation: check the module under the actual simultaneous-load pattern
  • DC solenoid control: switch compatible valves with external suppression
  • Relay and contactor drive: energize documented coils within current limits
  • Panel signaling: operate DC indicators that meet the minimum load requirement
Description
Discrete DC actuators can be switched from one SLC 500 slot by 1746-OB16, a 16-point sourcing output module operating from 10 to 50 V DC. Its documented current limit changes with ambient temperature and total module loading.

Fast solid-state switching gives 1746-OB16 a maximum delay of 0.1 ms when turning on and 1 ms when turning off. Loads must still satisfy the 1 mA minimum current and the per-point, module-total, and thermal limits published for the installation.

Protection remains external to 1746-OB16; the standard module does not provide electronic short-circuit protection. Selection and commissioning should therefore review branch protection, inductive-load suppression, field-supply polarity, terminal mapping, and the observed safe state when controller power or field power is removed.

Technical notes
Unlike the electronically protected catalog variant, 1746-OB16 does not provide electronic short-circuit protection. Size external protection and inductive-load suppression for the actual 10–50 V DC circuits, then apply the temperature-dependent per-point and module-current limits; do not treat a reused terminal block as proof that the field loads are protected.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
Why can a field short damage or disable a circuit driven by 1746-OB16?
The standard module has no electronic short-circuit protection. Inspect the external protective device, field wiring, load, and suppression before replacing the module or re-energizing the branch.
How should several high-current loads be distributed on 1746-OB16?
Calculate each point and the simultaneous module total at the maximum cabinet ambient. Group duty cycles deliberately and keep every branch within the official derated limits.
What can cause a small indicator to remain off when 1746-OB16 is commanded on?
Check field voltage, sourcing polarity, the 1 mA minimum load, terminal continuity, output LED, and commanded image. Very small loads may not satisfy the output's operating requirement.
Why might a solenoid connected to 1746-OB16 create intermittent controller faults?
An unsuppressed inductive load can generate transients. Verify the suppression device, grounding, field-supply quality, conductor routing, and branch protection against the official installation guidance.
What should be included in a functional test after replacing 1746-OB16?
Prove every point under its real load, check safe states, measure voltage drop where needed, observe simultaneous-load heating, and confirm that external protection operates without affecting unrelated circuits.
Which order details matter most for 1746-OB16?
Specify the exact catalog and Series, quantity, condition, terminal-block requirement, destination, delivery date, field voltage, largest load current, and whether the installation expected electronic protection.
