Features:
- Bridge Between Field Instrumentation and Safety Manager Controller via Dual Ethernet Links
- Integrates Capability of Universal Signal Conditioning with Configurable Safety Functionality
- Functions Seamlessly with the SM Controller and Series C Safety Architecture
The FC-RUSIO-3224 operates as the primary safe I/O interface in a Safety Manager rack, processing 32 universal channels that can be individually configured through Safety Builder software. It continuously handles diverse signal types including digital inputs and outputs with loop monitoring, as well as active analog inputs and outputs in both 0-20mA and 4-20mA ranges. All channels draw power from the centralized 24Vdc supply distributed through the IOTA backplane, ensuring consistent and reliable operation across the entire module. The FC-RUSIO-3224 delivers seamless communication with the SM Controller via dual 100Mbaud Ethernet links, while redundant configurations require two FC-RUSIO-3224 modules to achieve full fault tolerance up to SIL 3 per IEC 61508/61511.
The FC-RUSIO-3224 provides essential I/O functions critical to the entire safety loop, serving as a vital component of the safety path that directly impacts the proper, normal operation of the overall safety instrumented system. One or two FC-RUSIO-3224 modules may be deployed per application depending on the desired redundancy level and channel count requirements. The FC-RUSIO-3224 occupies a standardized slot position within the patented Series C form factor and must be mounted on a dedicated IO Termination Assembly (IOTA) for proper signal termination and power distribution.
For Dual Redundant I/O applications, the Safety Manager System requires a second FC-RUSIO-3224 module installed in the redundant configuration. Beyond standard single module operation, the redundant setup performs automatic failover. The dual module configuration executes switchover using the internal safety protocols specified in the Safety Manager architecture. Using this method, the redundant I/O system continually monitors the health of both FC-RUSIO-3224 modules. If the system detects that the primary module is no longer providing valid output or communication, it will automatically transfer control to the secondary module and generate appropriate diagnostic events within the safety system.
The FC-RUSIO-3224 HONEYWELL Universal Safe I/O Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

- Oil & Gas and Chemicals: Used for emergency shutdown (ESD) and fire and gas (F&G) monitoring.
- Power Generation: Turbine overspeed protection and boiler safety interlocking.
- Manufacturing: Safety protection for hazardous substance handling and equipment monitoring.
- Localized Safeguarding: Capable of "logic solving," allowing it to execute safety logic independently if communication with the main controller is lost.
- Mounting: Modules are typically installed in a clean, dry control cabinet. For redundancy, two modules are placed on a Redundant IOTA (e.g., FC-IOTA-R24).
- Wiring: Field devices connect directly to the IOTA. The module supports loop monitoring to detect faults like short circuits or open wires in real-time.
- Intrinsic Safety: Can be integrated with specialized boards (like the Pepperl+Fuchs integration board) for use in hazardous areas.
- Soft Configuration: Each of the 32 channels is individually assigned a function (Digital Input, Digital Output, Analog Input 4-20mA, or Analog Output) within the software.
- Special Functions: Channel 32 can be specifically configured for a dedicated Emergency Shutdown (ESD) function.
- Diagnostic Tools: The module includes built-in diagnostics for temperature monitoring, watchdog timers for cycle time, and 1ms resolution Sequence of Event (SOE) time stamping for precise fault analysis.
- HART Support: Supports the HART protocol for remote configuration and calibration of smart field devices.
