Features:
- Extends Honeywell TDC 3000 Local Control Network (LCN) to remote locations using fiber optic cables; supports long-distance communication with high noise immunity
- Uses SMA Type fiber optic connectors for reliable optical signal transmission; typically deployed in sets of four boards for redundant A/B cable paths
- Designed specifically for TDC 3000 DCS; critical spare part for existing installations since the replacement XLCNE2 is not backward compatible
The 51304540-200 (LCNE2 Paddle Board) is specifically designed to extend the Local Control Network (LCN) in Honeywell TDC 3000 Distributed Control Systems. In large industrial facilities such as oil refineries, chemical plants, and power stations, control cabinets may be physically separated by hundreds of meters. Standard copper-based LCN communication is limited in distance and susceptible to electrical noise. The 51304540-200 solves this by converting electrical LCN signals to optical signals for transmission over fiber optic cables. Optical fiber provides complete electrical isolation, immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI) from motors, drives, and switchgear, and supports much longer cable runs.
The 51304540-200 uses SMA (SubMiniature version A) Type fiber optic connectors, a threaded standard known for its robust mechanical connection and low loss in industrial environments. A typical LCN extension configuration requires four boards: one for the A cable and one for the B cable at the local cabinet, and another pair at the remote cabinet. The A and B cables provide redundant communication paths – if one fiber is damaged, the other continues to operate. The SMA connectors ensure that the fiber optic cables remain securely attached, even in high-vibration areas near rotating machinery.
The 51304540-200 is a discontinued product, but it remains a critical spare part for the thousands of Honeywell TDC 3000 systems still in operation worldwide. Honeywell has introduced the XLCNE2 as a replacement, but crucially, the XLCNE2 is not compatible with existing LCNE2-based systems. This means that plants using the 51304540-200 cannot simply upgrade to the newer board; they must either maintain their existing LCNE2 spares or undertake a larger system migration. For plant operators, this compatibility lock-in makes the 51304540-200 an essential inventory item.
The 51304540-200 Honeywell LCNE2 Paddle Board may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond
End-Of-Life (EOL)by the manufacturer (OEM).

- Oil and Gas Refining: Used to connect central control rooms and field processing units located far apart.
- Chemical and Petrochemical Plants: Utilizes fiber optics to extend communications in areas with electromagnetic interference or flammability risks to ensure signal isolation and safety.
- Power Generation: Monitors generator units and grid equipment distributed throughout the plant area.
- Remote Operating Station Connections: When the distance between the universal station and the LCN coaxial cable segment exceeds the 300-meter limit, LCNE2 is used to extend the communication distance to a maximum of 2 kilometers.
- Fiber Optic Media Protection: Utilizes the inherent electromagnetic interference (EMI) immunity of fiber optic transmission to prevent damage to the control network from lightning strikes or high-voltage equipment.
- Redundant Configuration: Typically used in pairs, automatically switching to a backup path when the primary path fails, ensuring uninterrupted communication.
- Hardware Self-Diagnosis: Supports online status analysis via TDC 3000's system maintenance tools; LED indicators on the modules provide real-time feedback on communication health.
- Electrical Protection: This version is CE certified, compliant with European electromagnetic compatibility directives, and offers superior electrical stability.
- Installation Notes: The chassis power must be turned off before removing or installing the Paddle Board; otherwise, backplane wiring may be burned out.
- Slot Restrictions: It must be installed in a specific numbered slot (e.g., a specific location in an LCN 10 slot chassis). Incorrect insertion may damage the device.
- System Migration: For legacy systems, the existing LCN network can be integrated into a more modern management environment by installing the LCN Upgrade Kit.
