Features:
- Delivers 27 amps maximum output current at 6.5 VDC ±1% with 175 watts output power at 140°F (60°C) ambient, requiring minimum 240W input power per module.
- Features five diagnostic LEDs (PASS, FAULT, ALARM, TEMP, BAT LOW) plus alarm contacts (NO, NC, common) that actuate for power loss, module failure, configuration conflicts, and over-temperature.
- Chassis holds two power modules with either capable of full-load operation.
The 8312 is designed to provide robust, reliable DC power to the Tricon chassis under demanding conditions. It converts 230 VAC input (range 185–285 VAC) to a tightly regulated 6.5 VDC output with only ±1% variation across all operating conditions. The module delivers 27 amps maximum output current, translating to 175 watts of output power at 140°F (60°C) ambient temperature. Input power requirement is 240 watts minimum per power module, with a 2.5 amp time-delay fuse for protection. Output hold time is 20 ms minimum from nominal to 0 volts, ensuring stable operation during momentary line disturbances.
The 8312 provides extensive diagnostic visibility to help maintenance teams quickly identify power-related issues. Five front-panel LEDs offer immediate status indication: PASS (green, normal operation), FAULT (red, internal module failure), ALARM (yellow, warning condition), TEMP (yellow, over-temperature), and BAT LOW (yellow, low battery warning). An internal over-temperature sensor trips when temperature exceeds 181°F (83°C), typically at ambient of 140°F (60°C) or higher.
The 8312 is part of a redundant power architecture where each Tricon chassis accommodates two power modules. Either module alone is fully capable of running the entire Tricon system at full load and rated temperature, providing true 1+1 redundancy. This design eliminates the power supply as a single point of failure in safety-critical applications. The 8312 supports online replacement (hot-swapping), allowing a failed module to be removed and replaced without powering down the system or interrupting the safety function of the controller.
The 8312 TRICONEX Power Supply Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL)by the manufacturer (OEM).

- Upstream & Downstream Oil and Gas: Installed on offshore drilling platforms, Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units, oil refineries, and large-scale LNG receiving terminals.
- Petrochemical & Chemical Processing: Deployed in ethylene crackers, high-pressure reactor units, and hydrocracking facilities to sustain Emergency Shutdown (ESD) systems.
- Nuclear & Conventional Power Generation: Acts as the robust power pillar for Reactor Protection Systems (RPS), Engineered Safety Features Actuation Systems (ESFAS), and critical gas/steam turbine trip systems.
- Critical Infrastructure: Supplies power to safety interlocking networks in transcontinental pipelines and subsea pumping stations.
- Dual Power Redundancy:Every Tricon chassis typically houses two 8312 modules (left and right position) working in a parallel, load-sharing configuration. If one module experiences a component failure or losing its AC feed, the remaining module instantly assumes 100% of the chassis load within microseconds without causing any voltage drops or system resets.
- Input Voltage Range: Supports a broad AC spectrum from 185 to 285 VAC, mitigating severe grid voltage sags or swells.
- Hold-Up Time: Features a high-capacity internal capacitor bank. During a temporary grid blackout (voltage blink), the module maintains a steady DC output for tens of milliseconds, giving external Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) enough time to switch lines.
- Online Hot-Swapping Capability:The module is fully hot-swappable. Maintenance personnel can remove a degraded power supply and slide in a new one while the system is active and online, completely eliminating the need to take the plant down for maintenance.
- The Tricon controller, communication links, and field digital outputs continue running smoothly. This configuration protects the plant from a costly false shutdown, saving the operator millions in lost production time.
- After years of continuous service, the Tricon system flags a diagnostic alarm indicating that the left 8312 module's internal capacitors are aging, causing a slight drift in internal voltage (the front panel FAULT red LED turns on).
- In a nuclear power facility, an emergency reactor trip must execute even during intense seismic activity or severe electromagnetic interference (EMI). The 8312's heavy internal shielding and built-in surge isolation networks prevent electrical noise from penetrating the backplane, ensuring the main processors successfully deliver the safety rod drop command without interruption.
