Features:
- A defined coupling boundary links standard PROFIBUS DP to an RS485-IS segment.
- The intrinsically safe side supports approved field nodes in hazardous-area installations.
- A 24 V DC supply and IP20 housing suit protected control-cabinet mounting.
The coupler performs a safety-related physical-layer conversion rather than acting as a general Ethernet or protocol gateway.
Cable, node and termination limits on the RS485-IS side must be taken from the certified Siemens segment design.
Commissioning should verify both PROFIBUS communication and the hazardous-area installation conditions.
The Siemens 6ES7972-0AC80-0XA0 PROFIBUS DP/RS485-IS Coupler may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

Separating the two PROFIBUS segments
- DP side: The standard PROFIBUS DP segment connects on the non-intrinsically-safe side.
- IS side: The RS485-IS connection serves field nodes approved for the intrinsically safe segment.
- Coupler role: Physical-layer values are converted while the PROFIBUS communication path is retained.
- Installation limit: The safety boundary is valid only inside the documented certificate and wiring conditions.
Supplying the coupler correctly
- Nominal system: The device belongs to a 24 V DC control supply.
- Permitted range: The documented supply extends from 20.4 to 28.8 V DC.
- Termination: Power is landed on the specified screw-terminal connection.
- Heat load: Allow for approximately 3 W of power loss in the enclosure design.
Hazardous-area checks before startup
- Certificate match: Verify the current approval documents for the country and target zone.
- Node approval: Every connected device must be approved for the intended RS485-IS segment.
- Segment budget: Cable and node electrical values must remain inside the certified bus budget.
- Cabinet protection: The IP20 coupler requires the enclosure protection specified for its installation area.
Separating topology faults from safety issues
- DP test: Confirm master configuration, address and termination on the standard DP side.
- IS test: Inspect the intrinsically safe cable, terminators and permitted field-node arrangement.
- Supply test: Measure the 24 V DC supply within the stated 20.4 to 28.8 V range.
- Boundary rule: Do not substitute ordinary RS485 parts across the certified interface.
