Features:
- Adds CANopen and transparent CAN 2.0A communication to an S7-1200 controller.
- Operates as a commander or responder and stores its configuration without power.
- Separates the CAN subnetwork electrically from the PLC-side electronics.
The selected CAN role determines how 021620-B organizes nodes and message handling.
Mini-USB is reserved for loading the configuration, while D-Sub 9 carries the operating CAN network.
Fixed input and output data areas connect the module's CAN messages to the S7-1200 program.
The Anybus 021620-B Ixxat CM CANopen Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

Node-Control Modes
- Commander mode: One module controls up to 16 CANopen responder nodes.
- Responder mode: The 021620-B presents its data to an external CANopen commander.
- Transparent mode: CAN 2.0A frames can carry a user-defined protocol.
- CPU capacity: As many as three modules can create separate networks on one S7-1200.
Engineering and Storage Path
- PLC integration: The module is added to the S7-1200 project in TIA Portal.
- Network setup: CAN parameters and object assignments are prepared with the Ixxat configuration tools.
- Transfer port: Mini-USB carries the completed setup into the module.
- Retention: Nonvolatile memory preserves the configuration through a power cycle.
PLC-to-CAN Data Flow
- Input area: Up to 256 bytes from the CAN network are presented to the PLC.
- Output area: Another 256 bytes carry controller data toward CAN.
- Network speed: The CAN bit rate is configurable from 20 kbit/s through 1 Mbit/s.
- Runtime connector: The D-Sub 9 interface carries the operating subnetwork signals.
Electrical and Diagnostic Boundary
- Galvanic separation: The CAN subnetwork is isolated from the controller-side circuit.
- Status display: Three LEDs identify module and network conditions.
- Supply: The electronics use 5 V DC within a ±10 percent tolerance.
- Cabinet limit: The IP20 module operates from 0 to 60 °C in a protected enclosure.
