Features:

  • Supports both rack-optimized connections (grouping multiple discrete I/O modules into one connection) and direct connections for real-time data transfer.
  • Uses the Control and Information Protocol to reduce network traffic via change-of-state (COS) or periodic data production, replacing inefficient polling.
  • Allows mixing of connection types per I/O module, requires no network scheduling or routing tables, and supports removal/insertion under power (RIUP).
The 1756-ENET/B excels at conserving connections. By supporting rack-optimized connections, it combines data from multiple discrete I/O modules into a single block sent over one connection. This transforms a scenario needing ten direct connections into just one, freeing up controller resources and simplifying network configuration.

Using the producer/consumer model via CIP, the 1756-ENET/B eliminates traditional polling. Input modules produce data upon a change of state or periodically, not when asked. This multicasting approach, managed by the 1756-ENET/B, drastically reduces network traffic and increases data transmission speed across Ethernet/IP.

The 1756-ENET/B adapts to your exact needs. You can mix rack-optimized and direct connections for different I/O modules in the same chassis. It requires no routing tables or network scheduling, and supports under-power removal/insertion, making the 1756-ENET/B easy to maintain and replace without system shutdown.

The 1756-ENET/B Allen-Bradley Communication Interface Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

  • Legacy System Maintenance: Used in older factories that have been in operation for over 15-20 years to maintain communication with existing ControlLogix 5550 or earlier 5560 systems.
  • Basic Data Gateway: Used to transmit PLC data to upper-level HMIs (such as earlier versions of FactoryTalk View) or SCADA systems in scenarios where ultra-high-speed I/O updates are not required.
  • Cross-Network Bridging: Acts as a bridge within the ControlLogix rack, allowing engineers to access other network modules (such as ControlNet or DeviceNet) within the same rack via Ethernet paths.
  • Communication Rate: Supports 10 Mbps Ethernet. Compared to the 100/1000 Mbps of later models, its bandwidth is extremely limited.
  • Duplex Mode: Primarily operates in half-duplex mode. This means data cannot be sent and received simultaneously, which can easily lead to collisions under high traffic loads, resulting in reduced efficiency.
  • Processing Capacity: Its packet processing speed (PPS) is approximately 900 pps, far lower than the 5000 pps of the 1756-ENBT, making it unsuitable for high-frequency motion control or very large I/O networks.
  • Non-critical Monitoring: Suitable for environmental monitoring and energy metering data acquisition where sampling frequency requirements are not high.
  • HMI Communication Terminal: Connects to early PanelView touchscreens or third-party HMIs.
  • Remote Maintenance Access: Technicians connect to the on-site PLC via the office network to upload/download and diagnose ladder diagram programs.
Description
The 1756-ENET/B module performs two primary tasks: real-time I/O control (implicit messaging) and support of configuration, programming, and operator interface data (explicit messaging). It uses the Control and Information Protocol (CIP) as its application layer, following the producer/consumer model to reduce network traffic and increase speed.

Rack-optimized connections on the 1756-ENET/B group data from multiple I/O modules into a single block sent over one connection, drastically reducing total connection usage. For example, ten discrete I/O modules in a remote chassis would require ten direct connections but only one rack-optimized connection through the 1756-ENET/B.

The 1756-ENET/B also allows mixing communication formats within the same chassis. Modules set for rack optimization communicate at the module’s configured Requested Packet Interval (RPI), while modules set for direct connections ignore the Ethernet module’s RPI and use their own.

You can install the 1756-ENET/B in any ControlLogix chassis, with the number of modules per chassis limited only by chassis size. The module supports removal or insertion under power and requires no network scheduling or routing tables.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
How many connections does the 1756-ENET/B save when I have many I/O modules?
The 1756-ENET/B dramatically reduces connections. For 10 discrete I/O modules in a remote chassis, direct connections require 10 connections, but a rack-optimized connection requires only 1 connection to the 1756-ENET/B. This conserves your controller's connection budget.
Can I mix analog and digital I/O behind a single 1756-ENET/B?
Yes, but with limitations. You can mix formats in the same chassis. However, rack-optimized connections on the 1756-ENET/B work only for discrete digital I/O. Analog I/O modules always require direct connections and will ignore the Ethernet module’s RPI.
Is the 1756-ENET/B compatible with my older Logix controller?
The 1756-ENET/B module requires a Logix 5550 controller with firmware version 6.10 or higher. It also needs RSLogix 5000 software 7.0 or higher. If your system is older than these versions, you must upgrade firmware or software before using the 1756-ENET/B.
Do I need to shut down the chassis to replace a faulty 1756-ENET/B?
No. The 1756-ENET/B supports removal or insertion under power (RIUP). You can replace the module without shutting down the ControlLogix chassis, which avoids production stoppages. After replacement, no routing tables need to be reconfigured, as the producing device holds all path information.
