More Information

Overview Manuals Compatibility Configuration Diagnostics Application
  • Two independently addressed DeviceNet scanner channels
  • Mapped I/O, explicit messaging, cyclic, and change-of-state data handling
  • Series-mode support for maintaining earlier 1771-SDN installations

1771-SDN is an Allen-Bradley DeviceNet scanner module designed for supported 1771 chassis and block-transfer-capable PLC processors.

It links PLC data tables to two DeviceNet channels and provides channel status, node/error displays, scan-list control, and explicit-message services.

Before installation or replacement, verify hardware Series, compatibility mode, slot and addressing rules, network settings, EDS files, scan lists, and processor logic.

Availability, condition, price, and shipping time for 1771-SDN are confirmed during quotation.

  • Fits 1771-A1B through 1771-A4B or later supported I/O chassis
  • Works with PLC-2, PLC-3, or PLC-5 processors that support block transfers
  • Does not support complementary-I/O chassis or a rack behind a 1771-SN subscanner
  • Separate switchbanks set channel data rate and node address
  • Default settings are node 63 and 125 kbit/s on each channel
  • Series C compatibility mode is selected before replacing an earlier scanner
  • Module status reports power and internal operating condition
  • Each channel has independent network status and numeric node/error display
  • Device-active and failure tables support PLC-side network diagnosis
  • DeviceNet connection of 1734 POINT I/O stations to PLC-5 control
  • DeviceNet scanning of 1794 FLEX I/O adapters and field devices
  • DeviceNet integration of drives, operator devices, and discrete sensors into 1771 systems
Description
1771-SDN is an Allen-Bradley DeviceNet scanner module for compatible 1771 chassis and PLC-2, PLC-3, or PLC-5 processors supporting block transfers.

The scanner provides two DeviceNet channels, mapped discrete and block-transfer data exchange, explicit messaging, change-of-state operation, cyclic I/O, status displays, and scan-list management.

Before installation or replacement, confirm Series mode, chassis addressing, slot restrictions, node addresses, data rates, network power, termination, EDS compatibility, scan lists, and PLC transfer logic.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
Can Allen-Bradley 1771-SDN Series C replace a Series A or Series B scanner?
Yes, Rockwell states Series C is compatible, but Switch 5 must select the appropriate earlier-Series mode and the existing PLC logic, EDS, scan lists, and channel setup must be retained.
Why can Allen-Bradley 1771-SDN not be placed beside every 16-point module?
The scanner consumes and produces eight discrete bits. In certain one-slot addressing arrangements, Rockwell restricts adjacent placement because the image-table allocation can conflict with a 16-point module.
Can Allen-Bradley 1771-SDN operate in a chassis configured for complementary I/O?
No. Rockwell explicitly excludes complementary-I/O chassis and remote chassis connected behind a preceding 1771-SN sub-I/O scanner.
What should be preserved before clearing the Allen-Bradley 1771-SDN scan list?
Save the RSNetWorx project, both channel scan lists, input and output maps, explicit-message transactions, PLC block-transfer addresses, node assignments, data rates, and device EDS records.
Why can an Allen-Bradley 1771-SDN show a healthy module while one DeviceNet channel remains offline?
Module status and channel status are separate. Check that channel's network supply, node address, data rate, trunk termination, cable polarity, duplicate nodes, and scan-list entries.
What firmware concern applies to Allen-Bradley 1771-SDN Series C scanners handling multi-byte polled data?
Rockwell issued a service advisory for affected Series C firmware through 6.004; firmware 6.005 corrected the documented polled-data behavior. Verify the installed revision before reuse.
Can Allen-Bradley 1771-SDN communicate with a processor that lacks block-transfer instructions?
No supported path is documented. The PLC-2, PLC-3, or PLC-5 processor must support block-transfer read and write instructions for the scanner's mapped data and command exchange.
