Features:
- Interface Between the SoftLogix Platform and Intelligent SERCOS Drives
- Enables High-Speed Fiber-Optic Communication with Programmable Ring Parameters
- Operates in Conjunction with SoftLogix5860 Controllers and RSLogix 5000 Software
The Allen-Bradley 1784-PM16SE serves as the 16 Axis SERCOS Interface Module within the SoftLogix Virtual Chassis, establishing reliable real-time communication between the SoftLogix processor and up to 16 intelligent servo drives. It continuously transmits position and velocity profile data via IEC 1491 SERCOS protocol over fiber optic medium at selectable ring data rates of 4 or 8 Mbaud, distributing motion commands through the SERCOS ring to support coordinated multi-axis operation in either position or velocity mode. Seamless message conversion is standard with the 1784-PM16SE, as it automatically translates ASA messages into SERCOS formatted messages to ensure protocol compatibility across the motion control network.
The 1784-PM16SE provides essential SERCOS interface functions common to the entire motion control path, and is a critical component of the coordinated axis architecture, directly affecting the proper, real-time operation of the overall servo system. One 1784-PM16SE module is required per SoftLogix controller for each SERCOS ring of up to 16 axes, with each controller capable of supporting multiple motion interface cards alongside 1784-PM02AE servo modules. The 1784-PM16SE occupies a dedicated slot within the SoftLogix Virtual Chassis and is configured through the Chassis Monitor alongside ControlNet, DeviceNet, and other communication interface cards.
For expanded multi-axis applications, the SoftLogix System allows a single SoftLogix5860 controller to coordinate multiple 1784-PM16SE SERCOS interface modules and 1784-PM02AE servo modules simultaneously. In addition to standard SERCOS ring operation, the hybrid configuration also performs integrated motion control. The SoftLogix motion architecture executes profile generation using the high-speed motion task within the controller, which generates ladder motion commands and position/velocity data.
The 1784-PM16SE Allen-Bradley 16 Axis SERCOS interface module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

- SoftLogix Control Link: Serves as a critical communication bridge connecting an Allen-Bradley SoftLogix 5800 controller platform to complex, multi-axis motion setups.
- Servo Drive Interfacing: Synchronizes complex motion commands over a high-speed fiber-optic network with major drive systems, including the Kinetix 6000, Ultra3000 SERCOS drives, 1394 SERCOS systems, and 8720MC spindle applications.
- Target Machinery: Commonly deployed in high-speed packaging lines, robotic arms, CNC machine tool spindles, automotive assembly lines, and material handling systems requiring synchronized coordination of up to 16 independent axes.
- Hardware Installation: Must be inserted into an available 32-bit local PCI bus slot on an industrial computer featuring a genuine Intel processor qualified for SoftLogix controllers. It supports a 33MHz PCI bus speed utilizing a 5 VDC or 3.3 VDC universal bus signaling configuration.
- Software Environment: System programming, network configuration, and axis profiling are carried out within Studio 5000 Logix Designer or RSLogix 5000.
- System Profiling: Configuration is managed via the software's I/O configuration organizer, where engineers specify the exact PCI slot, establish Electronic Keying options, and monitor the SERCOS communication ring status and cycle times.
- Physical Connectivity: Utilizes fiber-optic cabling configured in a SERCOS ring topology to transmit data securely and provide complete immunity to electromagnetic noise between the PCI card and downstream drives.
- Industrial Deployment Standards: Certified under EN 50081-2 EMC (Generic Emission Standard for Industrial Environments) and EN 50082-2 EMC (Generic Immunity Standard for Industrial Environments) to guarantee reliable data exchange in high-noise factory zones.
- Safety & Low Voltage Compliance: Tested to meet Council Directive 73/23/EEC Low Voltage guidelines using EN 61131-2 programmable controller standards.
- Operational Guidelines: Requires strict adherence to standard Rockwell Automation Industrial Wiring and Grounding Guidelines to eliminate harmful electrostatic discharge (ESD) or ground-loop disruptions.
