More Information

Overview Manuals Loop Interface Termination Diagnostics Application
  • Receives eight isolated 4–20 mA process inputs
  • Provides documented loop power for compatible two-wire transmitters
  • Supports remote termination through the specified 1771-RTP4 arrangement

1771-NIS is an Allen-Bradley high-resolution sourcing analog input module for current-loop instrumentation.

Unlike a passive current-input module, it can supply the documented loop power used by compatible two-wire field transmitters.

Confirm transmitter polarity, loop ownership, isolation, remote termination and block-transfer configuration before reconnecting field circuits.

Availability, condition, price, and shipping time for 1771-NIS are confirmed during quotation.

  • Configure each channel for the documented sourcing or sinking arrangement
  • Module-supplied loop power is available for compatible two-wire transmitters
  • Externally powered transmitters require the alternate official connection and correct polarity
  • Use the documented remote termination panel and interconnect cable
  • Verify terminal assignments, fuses, shields, and loop returns before startup
  • Preserve the channel-to-terminal mapping during replacement
  • Channel diagnostics include open-circuit detection
  • Programmable scaling and alarms are transferred through the module configuration
  • Use the official external-reference procedure when self-calibration is required
  • Isolated 4–20 mA process-transmitter acquisition
  • Loop-powered two-wire transmitter systems
  • High-resolution multi-loop process monitoring with remote termination
Description
Designed around eight isolated 4–20 mA inputs, the 1771-NIS brings field-transmitter current loops into a compatible PLC-5 system through the high-resolution 1771 N-Series analog architecture.

Its channels can operate as sourcing or sinking inputs. In a sourcing arrangement, loop power for compatible two-wire transmitters is supplied by the module; in a sinking arrangement, loop power is furnished externally.

Field signals do not connect directly to the module face. The documented installation uses a compatible remote termination panel connected by a 1771-NC6 cable for a 1.83 m route or a 1771-NC15 cable for a 4.57 m route.

A complete 1771-NIS channel arrangement is determined by the termination panel, cable, transmitter polarity, selected loop-power source, grounding, scaling and alarm entries, chassis location, and controller block-transfer configuration.

Technical notes
1771-NIS operates through its remote termination panel and cable; preserve loop-power polarity, channel scaling, alarm limits, and block-transfer configuration to prevent open-circuit diagnostics.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
Can 1771-NIS replace a standard 1771 analog input module without changing field termination?
Do not assume direct interchangeability. Verify the remote termination panel, interconnect cable, loop-power method, channel polarity, isolation needs, addressing, scaling, alarms, and block-transfer layout before selection.
Are the 1771-RTP4 panel and interconnect cable included with 1771-NIS?
Treat the module, remote termination panel, and interconnect cable as separate system components unless the quoted stock description explicitly includes them; verify all three catalog identities before ordering.
Which remote termination panel is used with 1771-NIS?
The official documentation identifies the 1771-RTP4 remote termination panel. Confirm the panel, interconnect cable, fuse arrangement, terminal assignments, and loop-power configuration before replacement.
How should a buyer choose between module-powered and externally powered transmitters for 1771-NIS?
Follow the installed loop design and transmitter requirements. The chosen sourcing or sinking arrangement, polarity, remote-panel terminals, loop supply, and programmed channel setup must agree.
What configuration should be preserved before replacing 1771-NIS?
Save channel enables, scaling, alarm thresholds, loop-power arrangement, diagnostics, block-transfer words, chassis location, remote-panel wiring, and any external calibration-reference procedure.
How is 1771-NIS calibrated?
The module supports self-calibration using an external reference. Follow the official calibration connections and sequence and verify all affected channels before returning the loop to service.
Why might 1771-NIS show an open circuit after replacement?
Check the remote termination panel and cable, transmitter supply, sourcing-versus-sinking wiring, polarity, fuses, channel enable state, loop continuity, and restored block-transfer configuration.
