More Information

Overview Manuals Input Voltage Chassis Load Budget User Power Branch Product Applications

Features:

  • Dual-voltage AC input: supports jumper-selected 120 or 240 V AC service
  • Five-amp 5 V rail: powers a medium SLC 500 chassis load
  • Isolated user output: provides limited 24 V DC power for an approved auxiliary circuit
1746-P2 is sized for SLC 500 racks whose module mix fits its separate 5 V and 24 V capacities.

Its line-voltage jumper is a hardware commissioning decision rather than an automatic-ranging function.

The user output is useful for a small auxiliary load but remains inside the same power budget.
Apter Power can review 1746-P2 Series, line-input configuration, chassis load worksheet, condition, official records, and quotation requirements.

  • Measured supply: identify the real incoming AC range before wiring
  • Jumper position: set 120 or 240 V AC with power removed
  • Protection path: coordinate the upstream disconnect and overcurrent device with the official instructions
  • Five-volt total: sum processor and module demand on the logic rail
  • Twenty-four-volt total: include I/O, communication, and peripheral loading
  • Seventy-watt ceiling: calculate combined output power instead of comparing rail currents alone
  • Available current: reserve the isolated output only for a load within 200 mA
  • Voltage window: keep the connected circuit within the documented DC range
  • Fault isolation: distinguish a user-output problem from loss of chassis power before replacing the supply
  • Modular machine chassis: power an SLC processor and matched I/O set
  • Remote control panel: support a medium rack load from 120 or 240 V AC
  • Small auxiliary circuit: supply limited isolated 24 V DC power where the load budget permits
Description
SLC 500 chassis power is supplied by 1746-P2 from a jumper-selected 120 or 240 V AC source. It provides 5 A at 5 V DC and 0.96 A at 24 V DC for the processor and installed modules, subject to the combined output-power limit.

A separate isolated 24 V DC user output lets 1746-P2 power a small approved field load without adding another supply. That convenience does not increase the total capacity: the 5 V, 24 V backplane, and user output remain part of one 70 W calculation.

Before installing 1746-P2, match the line-voltage jumper to the incoming circuit and recalculate every chassis load at both DC rails. The user-power branch, protective device, grounding, and ventilation also need to follow the official power-supply instructions.

Technical notes
1746-P2 has independent current ratings but a shared 70 W output ceiling, so adding the maximum 5 V, 24 V, and user-output currents is not a valid chassis design. Calculate both rail currents and total watts, then stop commissioning if the line-voltage jumper does not match the measured AC supply.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
Why can an apparently acceptable module list still overload 1746-P2?
Each DC rail may be below its current limit while the combined output exceeds 70 W. The chassis worksheet must test rail current and total watts together.
What happens if the line-voltage jumper on 1746-P2 is set for the wrong AC range?
The supply is not autoranging. A wrong jumper can prevent correct operation or damage equipment, so isolate power and match the setting to a verified source before energizing.
Can the 24 V DC user output on 1746-P2 power several field sensors?
Only when their combined steady and inrush demand stays within the documented output and total power limits. Separate field supplies are preferable when the circuit margin is uncertain.
How should intermittent chassis resets around 1746-P2 be investigated?
Compare the event with AC input quality, rail loading, temperature, and module insertion. A reset that follows peak load or heat points to the power budget before processor logic.
Which evidence is needed before moving an SLC rack to a replacement 1746-P2?
Use the existing line-voltage setting, full chassis load worksheet, user-output load, supply Series, and panel protection record. Photographs of the jumper and nameplate reduce installation ambiguity.
When is 1746-P2 unsuitable for an expanded SLC 500 chassis?
It is unsuitable when either rail or the 70 W total is exceeded after expansion. Select a documented higher-capacity arrangement instead of relying on unused physical slots.
