More Information

Overview Manuals Specifications Sensor & Output Wiring Tuning & Maintenance Application
  • Four temperature inputs for documented thermocouple or millivolt signals
  • Four independent PID heat-or-cool control loops
  • Backplane integration with compatible local SLC 500 processors and chassis

1746-BTM combines multi-zone temperature measurement and PID control in one SLC 500 module.

Correct replacement depends on the local chassis, processor support, sensor type, thermocouple wiring, output hardware, loop tuning, alarms, calibration, and application program.

Commissioning should prove every temperature input, heat and cool output, alarm, sensor-fault action, safe shutdown, and stable process response before production.

Availability: Rockwell migration literature does not identify a direct replacement; condition and sourcing are confirmed during quotation.

Description
1746-BTM is an Allen-Bradley SLC 500 Barrel Temperature Control Module with four temperature inputs and four PID heat-or-cool control loops. It accepts thermocouple or documented millivolt inputs for multi-zone thermal control.

The module exchanges status and command data through the SLC backplane and supports calibration, autotune, alarm, and loop-control functions described in the official user manual. It is intended for a local SLC chassis rather than remote I/O placement.

Before replacement, preserve the application program, input types, thermocouple extension-wire details, loop tuning, setpoints, alarms, heat/cool outputs, calibration records, terminal assignments, and the complete processor and chassis configuration.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
Can 1746-BTM be installed in a remote SLC chassis?
No. The official manual specifies a local SLC chassis for barrel-temperature control applications; confirm processor, chassis, slot and power capacity.
What records are most important before replacing 1746-BTM?
Save the SLC program, loop tuning, setpoints, input types, output assignments, alarms, calibration data, terminal schedule, and all thermocouple wiring details.
Why might a 1746-BTM temperature channel drift after replacement?
Check thermocouple type, extension wire, polarity, junctions, grounding, electrical noise, terminal temperature, calibration, scaling, and whether the channel configuration matches the sensor.
When should autotune be repeated after replacing 1746-BTM?
Repeat the documented autotune procedure when the heater, cooling device, temperature sensor, controlled mass or process response has changed, or when the restored tuning constants do not produce stable control. Perform it under controlled operating conditions and preserve the accepted constants.
Why can a 1746-BTM temperature loop oscillate after the module is replaced?
Check the selected thermocouple type and polarity, scaling, heat/cool output assignment, cycle time, PID constants and sensor location. A copied configuration can still be unsuitable if the process hardware or thermal response has changed.
What should be checked when 1746-BTM reports an open or implausible temperature input?
Inspect the thermocouple and extension wire for continuity, correct alloy and polarity, loose RTB terminals, grounded-junction conflicts, shield routing and electrical noise. Also confirm that the configured sensor type matches the connected thermocouple.
What information should be provided when ordering a replacement 1746-BTM?
Provide the complete 1746-BTM catalog number, series and revision, clear label photographs, local SLC chassis and processor details, sensor types, heat/cool output wiring, RTB condition, saved configuration and the present diagnostic code.
