Features:
- Accepts a 25-pin male D-type mating connector at each female serial port.
- Supports recommended RS-422 cabling at distances up to 4000 ft (1200 m) and 19.2 kbps.
- Maintains a defined marking state when a compatible fail-safe line receiver encounters an idle, open, or shorted link.
IC630CCM390 maps the controller communication signals to the RS-422 standard names used for differential pairs, with B and B-prime representing the positive transmit and receive sides and A and A-prime representing the negative sides.
The mating-connector assembly includes a strain-relief point that can be secured with friction tape or a plastic cable tie. Belden 9184, Belden 9302, and NEC 22P15LCBT are identified as acceptable cable choices for the differential portion of the channel.
When the connected master is not a Series Six device, its line receiver must provide fail-safe behavior so an idle, open, or shorted condition resolves to the marking state rather than an undefined input.

Serial routes built around the adapter
- Workmaster path: IC630CCM390 connects the DCM or DCU side to the 9-pin RS-232 port on a Workmaster Combination Adapter Card.
- Direct alternative: A Workmaster fitted with the optional IC640BGB311A Asynchronous/Joystick Interface Card can connect directly to the controller RS-422 port without the adapter path.
- Modem channel: Point-to-point diagrams place IC630CCM390 between the differential controller cable and the single-ended modem interface.
- Signal continuity: Receive, transmit, request-to-send, clear-to-send, and ground relationships remain defined across the conversion path.
Approved cables and connector roles
- Host-side lead: IC630CBL390B is the 3 ft (1 m) cable from a Workmaster serial port to IC630CCM390.
- Controller-side lead: IC630CBL392A is the 10 ft (3 m) cable from a DCU or DCM to the adapter unit.
- Differential cable: Belden 9184, Belden 9302, or NEC 22P15LCBT provides an acceptable RS-422 cable construction.
- Mating hardware: The female 25-pin communication ports accept male D-type connectors assembled with strain relief.
RTS and CTS behavior on modem links
- Idle condition: The controller-side handshake output remains false while no data transmission is requested.
- Transmit request: A command to send data drives RTS true before the configured turnaround delay is applied.
- Clearance check: Transmission begins only after CTS is true at the end of the optional delay.
- Interrupted clearance: If CTS becomes false during a message, transfer stops at a character boundary and waits for CTS to return.
- Cycle completion: RTS returns false after the data block, and a flow-control device must also return CTS false.
Conditions for a stable RS-422 segment
- Common reference: Ground the controller module and the connected device to a common point to avoid equipment damage.
- Pair assignment: Keep both transmit conductors in one twisted pair and both receive conductors in the other pair to control crosstalk.
- Point-to-point end: Place the supplied 150-ohm resistor across the receive-data pair for links from 10 to 4000 ft.
- Multidrop ends: Terminate only the first and last drops; the last active receiver may require 120 to 240 ohms according to distance and drop count.
- Daisy-chain continuity: Use the in/out connector paths for intermediate drops instead of adding terminal strips along the transmission line.
