Features:
- Eight I/O positions maximize the usable module count in one Series Five base.
- A 19-inch frame aligns the rack with common control-cabinet width planning.
- Dual side connectors support continuation of the local I/O bus.
With all eight I/O positions populated, a single CPU base can concentrate as many as 256 points when the selected modules each provide 32 circuits.
The backplane accepts mixed Series Five module types and permits their I/O references to be assigned independently of slot sequence, giving the control program flexibility during cabinet layout.
Expansion cabling can enter from either side, but every added rack still needs its own supply, interface, unique base number, and correctly placed end terminator.
Apter Power can assist with configuration support and sourcing for the General Electric IC655CHS508 Base Unit with 8 I/O Slots in retained Series Five installations.

Using eight positions without exceeding rack power
- Worst-case total: Add the maximum internal draw of the controller, optional interface, and every proposed module before finalizing IC655CHS508.
- Supply choice: A dense rack may require the twelve-amp AC unit even when a six-amp supply fits mechanically.
- Unacceptable mix: Empty physical space is not proof of electrical capacity; an over-limit combination must be redistributed.
- Expansion option: Moving selected modules to another powered base can restore current margin while retaining the same local I/O chain.
Relating IC655CHS508 positions to the control program
- Physical order: User slots are marked 0 through 7 from left to right after the CPU or interface position.
- Reference flexibility: Logicmaster 5 allows I/O references to be assigned without requiring numerical correspondence to slot order.
- Base number: In a multi-rack system, set a unique ID from 0 to 7 and reserve zero for the CPU chassis.
- Maintenance record: Keep the configured base and slot references with cabinet drawings so replacement work preserves the intended signal map.
Allowing room for the full-width base
- Horizontal envelope: The 483 mm chassis width needs additional side clearance for expansion plugs and module handling.
- Mounting support: Four fasteners on the published center pattern distribute the populated rack load across the panel.
- Forward depth: The enclosure starts at a 139 mm minimum and grows with the deepest installed module and wire bend radius.
- Air passage: Clear regions above and below IC655CHS508 protect the natural convection path across a fully occupied base.
Connecting an eight-slot base to local expansion
- Interface slot: Install IC655BEM500 next to the power supply when IC655CHS508 operates away from the CPU base.
- Daisy-chain path: One side connector receives the preceding cable and the other continues toward the next rack.
- Length control: The sum of all standard local I/O cables must remain within the permitted chain distance.
- Last connection: The final unused connector accepts the terminator that closes the differential bus correctly.
