Features:
- Provides eight module positions in one Series Three PLC base unit.
- Accepts the documented Series Three AC or DC rack power-supply options.
- Can place Series Three I/O behind a Series Five interface without replacing the field-side rack.
The first Series Three interface in a Series Five base is assigned starting input and output addresses I0001 and O0001. Its location therefore affects how downstream I/O addresses are organized.
The interface reserves equal input and output ranges according to its DIP-switch setting, even when fewer physical points are installed in the connected Series Three racks.
With several interfaces present, the Series Five CPU assigns their I/O blocks sequentially; manually assigned modules must stay outside the complete ranges reserved for every Series Three branch.

Hardware required around the eight-slot base
- Rack power: IC630PWR310 supplies a 115/230 VAC installation, while IC630PWR314 is the listed 24 VDC option.
- Series Five bridge: IC655BEM530 provides the interface used when Series Three I/O is added to a Series Five controller.
- First connection: IC655CBL530 joins the Series Five interface to the CPU connector on the first Series Three power supply.
- Expansion links: IC630CBL304 and IC630CBL305 are the documented cable choices between additional Series Three bases.
Building the Series Three I/O branch
- Base count: One IC655BEM530 interface supports one to three connected Series Three base units.
- Power placement: Every base in the branch receives its own Series Three power supply rather than sharing rack power.
- Initial cable path: The Series Five-to-Series Three cable terminates at the CPU connector of the first base-unit power supply.
- Added racks: Each base beyond the first requires one Series Three I/O expander cable in the daisy-chained layout.
Capacity boundaries for an expanded rack group
- Physical capacity: IC630CHS308 provides eight positions, compared with the documented six- and four-slot Series Three base alternatives.
- Branch capacity: A single IC655BEM530 can service as many as 1024 points, divided into 512 inputs and 512 outputs.
- Controller scale: A Series Five I/O system can include up to four Series Three interface modules.
- Allocation limit: Rack additions must remain inside the I/O quantity selected for their associated interface module.
Preventing conflicts in the Series Five I/O map
- Selection increments: The interface DIP switch defines Series Three I/O capacity in groups of 32 points.
- Balanced ranges: Each setting reserves the same number of input and output references, regardless of the points physically installed.
- First branch: The initial interface receives starting references I0001 and O0001 under either CPU or user assignment.
- Multiple branches: CPU addressing places additional Series Three interfaces sequentially after the range used by the preceding interface.
- Manual assignment: Other I/O modules need address ranges that do not overlap the complete DIP-switch allocations of the Series Three interfaces.
