Features:
- Six freely assignable I/O positions fit a compact Series Five base.
- Separate power and processor locations preserve the standard rack sequence.
- Four-point panel mounting supports a rigid cabinet installation.
The narrower chassis suits systems that need fewer local modules while keeping the electrical and mechanical conventions used throughout the Series Five platform.
Each I/O reference can be assigned to the appropriate slot through Logicmaster 5, so cabinet position does not force a single fixed address order for mixed discrete or analog hardware.
Three compatible supply choices let the same base be built around 115/230 VAC or 24 VDC input, with the installed module load determining whether six or twelve amps of backplane capacity are required.
For compact controller or expansion assemblies, Apter Power can assist with the General Electric IC655CHS506 Base Unit with 6 I/O Slots and related Series Five hardware.

Organizing processor, interface, and I/O positions
- Power location: The Series Five supply occupies the far-left position and feeds the chassis backplane.
- Controller position: A CPU mounts immediately beside the supply when IC655CHS506 serves as the primary base.
- Expansion position: A local I/O interface uses that same adjacent location when the chassis is added to an I/O chain.
- I/O sequence: The six remaining positions run from 0 to 5, beginning at the slot next to the CPU or interface.
Preparing a stable surface for the six-slot frame
- Template method: Hold IC655CHS506 in its intended position to transfer the four mounting-hole locations to the panel.
- Upper support: Start the two top fasteners loosely so the chassis can hang in place while the lower holes are aligned.
- Final fastening: Install the lower bolts before tightening all four points, preventing the frame from twisting against the backplate.
- Cabinet allowance: Provide at least 139 mm of depth and additional clearance wherever module bodies or conductors extend beyond the base.
Preserving convection around a populated IC655CHS506
- Orientation: Mount the base horizontally so rising air can pass through the installed Series Five modules.
- Top and bottom: Keep approximately 50 mm clear on both edges instead of crowding the chassis against ducts or neighboring equipment.
- Side access: Similar free space at each end supports airflow and leaves room to attach or remove I/O expansion connectors.
- Heat check: Design the enclosure so air entering the modules does not exceed 60 °C at the expected rack load.
Extending local I/O from the compact base
- Interface requirement: Every IC655CHS506 used beyond the CPU base needs a local I/O interface beside its power supply.
- Bus connection: Either side connector may continue the daisy chain, leaving the opposite connector available for the preceding or following base.
- Base identity: Assign each chassis a unique number from 0 through 7, reserving ID 0 for the rack that contains the CPU.
- End termination: Fit the I/O terminator to the unused connector on the last base so the local bus ends correctly.
