Features:
- Eight current inputs accept 0-20 mA or 4-20 mA field signals with HART communication.
- A protected transmitter-supply path serves supported two-wire current transducers.
- Selectable integration and smoothing align signal conversion with the required interference rejection.
Installed in an ET 200M station, the SM331 passes digitized process values and HART variables through the IM153-2 to the automation controller.
Two-wire transmitters can use the module supply, while four-wire instruments feed their current signal into the same measurement channels from an external supply arrangement.
Group and channel indications separate a module-level condition from a fault on one field loop before the diagnostic data is evaluated in the controller.
The Siemens 6ES7331-7TF01-0AB0 SM331 HART Analog Input Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

Eight field measurement paths
- Input ranges: Each channel is configured for either 0-20 mA or 4-20 mA acquisition.
- Two-wire devices: The protected transmitter supply powers a supported two-wire transducer while the return current enters its measurement channel.
- Four-wire devices: An externally powered transducer feeds its current output directly into the assigned input pair.
- Potential group: The channels share their analog potential relationship but the input section is isolated from the backplane bus.
Measured values and device variables
- Primary value: The analog loop current is converted into the process value transferred to the ET 200M controller path.
- Auxiliary variables: HART auxiliary variables accompany the normal process measurement when the field device provides them.
- Station interface: IM153-2 carries the module data and HART communication between the remote I/O station and controller.
- Firmware function: The module supports the documented firmware-update function without changing the field-channel count.
Integration and smoothing choices
- Integration: The selected interval determines conversion behavior and the interference frequency rejected by the input.
- Smoothing: None, low, medium and high settings control how successive measured values are averaged.
- Resolution: Sigma-delta conversion produces a signed 16-bit result including the overrange representation.
- Channel response: Conversion time changes with the chosen integration setting, so noise rejection and update rate must be considered together.
From field loop to controller alarm
- Channel indication: A red F indicator points to the affected input path rather than only reporting a common module condition.
- Group indication: The red SF indicator summarizes a module fault for local inspection.
- Diagnostic alarm: Enabled diagnostic events are passed through the ET 200M station for controller evaluation.
- Limit alarm: Configured limit crossings can generate a process-related alarm separate from an electrical fault.
