Features:
- Provides eight managed combo positions for copper or SFP network media.
- Accepts two interface extenders for a maximum of 24 usable ports.
- Stores configuration on the supplied C-PLUG and supports optional KEY-PLUG routing.
Copper and optical choices share each base-unit position, so only one medium is active per combo port.
The console, management, signaling, and power connections remain separate from the data-port expansion path.
Managed functions cover VLAN assignment, ring redundancy, traffic diagnostics, access control, and synchronized network time.
The Siemens 6GK5408-8GS00-2AM2 SCALANCE XM408-8C Managed Modular Industrial Ethernet Switch may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

How an integrated port chooses its transmission medium
- Paired media: Every base position associates one RJ45 socket with one SFP receptacle.
- Exclusive use: Selecting the copper side leaves the paired optical side unavailable, and selecting SFP does the reverse.
- Copper path: The secured RJ45 connection negotiates supported 10, 100, or 1000 Mbit/s links.
- Optical path: The SFP side accepts supported 100 or 1000 Mbit/s plug-in transceivers.
Building beyond the eight-port base unit
- Extender positions: Two dedicated mechanical and electrical interfaces accept SCALANCE XM-400 extender modules.
- Port ceiling: Base and extender connections together are limited to 24 usable network ports.
- Media selection: Electrical, optical, and supported PoE extender choices determine the final port mix.
- Module exchange: The interface-module design supports documented hot-swapping without converting the base unit.
Available paths for restoring switched connectivity
- Industrial rings: HRP and MRP functions can place the switch in managed ring topologies.
- Interconnected rings: MRP-I links supported redundancy domains without collapsing them into one ring.
- Spanning trees: STP, RSTP, RSTP+, and MSTP control alternate Ethernet paths.
- Aggregated links: LACP combines supported parallel links under one managed connection.
Configuration and observation channels
- Local console: The RJ11 console port provides a service path separate from production Ethernet traffic.
- Web and CLI: Browser-based management and command-line access configure switching functions.
- Remote supervision: SNMP, RMON, SysLog, and email traps expose operational and error information.
- Traffic inspection: Port and multiport mirroring copy selected frames to an analysis connection.
