Features:
- Controls PROFINET IO devices through a two-port switched interface.
- Splits 16 MB of working memory evenly between program and data.
- Accepts an IF 964-DP module for an additional PROFIBUS connection.
The CPU 416-3 PN/DP combines program execution and network control in a two-slot S7-400 module.
MPI/DP, PROFINET, and the optional IF interface are configured as separate communication paths with their own station roles and address areas.
The processor supports isochronous operation over PROFIBUS DP or PROFINET when the project timing and connected devices are configured for that mode.
The Siemens 6ES7416-3ES06-0AB0 CPU 416-3 PN/DP Central Processing Unit may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

Building the switched Ethernet path
- Two ports: The integrated switch connects two RJ45 PROFINET links.
- Controller role: The CPU can manage as many as 256 configured IO devices.
- IRT timing: Isochronous operation is available with IRT and the high-performance option.
- Address change: The IP address can be reassigned at runtime through the documented controller or program method.
Adding the third communication interface
- Module type: The IF1 position accepts the IF 964-DP interface module.
- Bus role: The added interface can operate as a DP master or DP device.
- Master capacity: The optional DP channel supports up to 125 devices.
- Separate mapping: Input and output areas for the added bus are assigned independently in the hardware project.
Mapping process information
- Input space: The CPU provides a 16 KB input address area.
- Output space: A separate 16 KB area is available for outputs.
- Process image: Configured process-image partitions control which ranges update together.
- Consistency: A consistent data transfer can cover up to 244 bytes on the integrated DP path.
Coordinating time across networks
- Hardware clock: The real-time clock is retentive and synchronizable.
- Ethernet role: NTP client operation synchronizes the CPU through the PROFINET interface.
- DP role: The processor can distribute or receive time over configured PROFIBUS links.
- MPI role: Clock synchronization is also supported in MPI master or device operation.
