Features:

  • Connects ABB drives to ControlNet for control, monitoring, and fault reset.
  • Supports bus, star, and tree topologies at 5 Mbit/s.
  • Features IP20 protection, conformal coating, and diagnostic LEDs.
ABB FCNA-01 provides a communication bridge between ABB drives and ControlNet-based automation architectures. In installations where drive operation must be coordinated with a central controller, network communication reduces reliance on separate control connections for individual functions. Operators and control systems can exchange operating information through a common industrial network. Such integration is useful for production machinery, coordinated motor systems, and process automation where drive behavior forms part of a larger control sequence.

In operation, FCNA-01 makes key drive functions accessible to a compatible ControlNet scanner. Start, Stop, and Run Enable commands can be handled through network communication, while speed and torque references support centralized motion and process control. PID applications can exchange process actual values and process references with the drive controller. Status and actual value access also helps supervisory systems follow drive operating conditions during normal production.

ABB FCNA-01 offers installation flexibility for ControlNet networks built around different plant layouts. Bus, star, and tree arrangements allow the communication structure to match equipment distribution across machines or process areas, while repeaters can extend communication over greater distances. Diagnostic LEDs assist with checking network and module conditions during commissioning and maintenance. Conformal coating and compliance with EN 61800-3:2004 further support use in industrial drive applications where reliable communication and electromagnetic compatibility are important.

The ABB FCNA-01 ControlNet Adapter Module may be available from Apter Power for maintenance, replacement, and new integration applications, subject to stock confirmation.

Description
ABB FCNA-01 is an optional ControlNet adapter module installed directly into the option slot of an ABB drive. The module provides the communication interface required to connect the drive to a ControlNet network and supports any ControlNet scanner. With a transfer rate of 5 Mbit/s, FCNA-01 provides a practical communication path between drive functions and an industrial control network.

Through FCNA-01, a ControlNet scanner can send operating commands such as Start, Stop, and Run Enable to the drive. Motor speed or torque references can also be transferred through the network, allowing drive operation to be coordinated with the surrounding automation system. Process actual values or process references can additionally be supplied to the PID controller of the drive.

FCNA-01 also supports access to drive status information and actual values, giving the control system visibility into operating conditions. Drive faults can be reset through the adapter, supporting centralized operation and troubleshooting. Network installation can use bus, star, or tree topology, while the specified maximum bus length ranges from 250 m with 48 nodes to 1000 m with 2 nodes and up to 5000 m when repeaters are used.

For physical integration, FCNA-01 connects to the drive through a 20-pin interface and uses ControlNet line A and line B connections for RG-6 quad-shielded coaxial cable with BNC connectors. Power is supplied by the drive at +3.3 V +5%, with a maximum current requirement of 450 mA. The module has IP20 protection, uses a 75 Ohm, 1%, metal film, 1/4 W termination, and provides two bicolor LEDs plus one tricolor diagnostic LED for ControlNet and module indication. The conformal-coated printed circuit board complies with EMC standard EN 61800-3:2004.
