More Information

Overview Manuals DeviceNet Configuration System Layout Installation Application
  • Two rotary switches provide direct DeviceNet node-address selection
  • Software-assigned addressing is available through RSNetWorx for DeviceNet
  • The adapter determines the DeviceNet communication rate automatically at power-up

1769-ADN commissioning begins by assigning a unique DeviceNet node address with the front-panel MSD and LSD rotary switches or through the RSNetWorx Node Commissioning Tool.

Switch positions 00 through 63 select the address directly, while positions 64 through 99 use the software-programmed value; Series B adapters must not use position 95 during normal operation.

When 1769-ADN is the final device on the DeviceNet trunkline, install or relocate the specified termination resistor across CAN Low and CAN High before commissioning the network.

Availability, condition, price, and shipping time for 1769-ADN are confirmed during quotation.

  • RSNetWorx for DeviceNet defines the adapter and the complete local I/O arrangement
  • The stored configuration is compared with the physical station during power-up
  • EDS support and the correct hardware series must be confirmed before commissioning
  • The adapter occupies the leftmost position in the first Compact I/O bank
  • Each I/O bank requires a power supply and the final bank requires an end-cap terminator
  • Expansion cables and bank order must match the saved adapter configuration
  • Remove power before inserting or removing the adapter
  • Set the replacement adapter to the documented DeviceNet node address
  • Verify connector wiring, grounding, bus-lever engagement, and network termination before startup
  • Remote Compact I/O stations connected to a DeviceNet scanner
  • SLC systems using a 1747-SDN DeviceNet scanner
  • ControlLogix systems using a 1756-DNB DeviceNet scanner
Description
1769-ADN serves as the DeviceNet communication interface for a local Compact I/O assembly.

It transfers input and output data between a DeviceNet scanner and up to 30 connected 1769 modules through the CompactBus.

Technical notes
1769-ADN must be commissioned with the station’s saved RSNetWorx file, assigned DeviceNet node address, and exact Compact I/O bank sequence; an absent end cap or misplaced power supply prevents a valid I/O connection.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
Can 1769-ADN replace an installed adapter without rebuilding the DeviceNet configuration?
A replacement can reuse the installation only after the node address, adapter series, EDS support, physical I/O order, and stored RSNetWorx configuration are matched to the existing station.
Can 1769-ADN be installed in an existing multi-bank Compact I/O station?
Yes, provided the adapter remains at the left of the first bank, each bank has its required power supply, the expansion cables and final end cap are correct, and the physical module order matches the saved configuration.
Can 1769-ADN be removed while the Compact I/O station is powered?
No. Rockwell Automation instructs users to remove power before inserting or removing 1769-ADN because electrical arcing can cause equipment damage, unintended signals, or a hazardous-location risk.
What software is required to commission 1769-ADN?
Use RSNetWorx for DeviceNet to identify the installed modules and load the complete Compact I/O configuration into the adapter; confirm the correct EDS file for the adapter series.
What should be available on site before commissioning 1769-ADN?
Prepare the saved RSNetWorx configuration, the correct EDS file, the documented DeviceNet node address, the scanner project, the compatible removable connector, and the required Compact I/O expansion and end-cap hardware.
What should be checked in the DeviceNet wiring for 1769-ADN?
Confirm the removable connector wiring, cable type, shield and drain arrangement, connector torque, node address, and a 120/121-ohm trunk termination resistor when 1769-ADN is the last DeviceNet device.
Why might 1769-ADN reject an I/O connection after replacement?
The adapter will not accept I/O connections when the programmed system configuration does not match the actual module order, power supplies, expansion cables, or end caps, or when network addressing is incorrect.
