Features:
- Communications Interface Link for ASCII Serial Devices to 1769 Controllers
- Provides Two Isolated Serial Channels with Multi-Protocol Standard Support
- Integrates Directly with CompactLogix Controllers and MicroLogix 1500 Systems
The Allen-Bradley 1769-ASCII operates as a specialized serial communication module in a 1769 Compact I/O system, providing direct data exchange with a wide variety of ASCII-compatible field devices. It receives communication signals from external serial units and transfers parsed data across the 1769 backplane to enable seamless processing inside the controller memory. Operating with a 425 mA bus current draw at 5V DC and 2.13 W maximum power dissipation, the module draws all required operating power directly from the backplane without an external power supply. Independent channel configuration is standard on the 1769-ASCII, allowing both DB-9 male ports to communicate simultaneously in alternating or dual mode using distinct communication parameters.
The 1769-ASCII provides essential serial connectivity across the local I/O bus, directly enabling the control system to interface with third-party peripherals such as barcode readers, vision sensors, weigh scales, and RFID scanners. A single module handles up to two independent channels, expanding system connectivity without adding separate network gateways. The module occupies a single slot on the 1769 DIN-rail or panel setup and must be installed within a power supply distance rating of four modules from the system power supply.
For dual-port serial applications, the 1769-ASCII module utilizes Port 1 (configured for RS-232 or RS-422) and Port 2 (configured for RS-485) to communicate with distinct device networks. In addition to standard single-port operation, the dual-channel configuration performs hardware-handshaking using RTS/CTS signals. Using this method, the 1769-ASCII continuously monitors communication health via real-time status flags. If the module detects transmission issues, it updates dedicated diagnostic flags—including TX/RX activity, FIFO buffer overflow, parity error, handshake error, and new data indicators—directly in the controller backplane tags.
The 1769-ASCII Allen-Bradley Compact Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

- Product Traceability: It feeds data from inline barcode scanners, 2D matrix readers, and RFID antennas straight into the controller tag database.
- Weighing Operations: It links directly to digital weigh scales and industrial laboratory balances to capture precision weight metrics.
- Legacy Displays & Printers: It pushes string commands out to industrial marquee signs, status displays, or alphanumeric ticket printers.
- 1. Mounting: Snap the module securely onto a heavy-duty DIN rail or fasten it directly to an enclosure backpanel.
- 2. Bus Connection: Slide the module alongside the existing controller setup using the built-in guide slots. Slide the bus lever firmly to the left to lock the backplane connector.
- 3. Field Wiring: Attach your serial cables to the removable terminal block. The removable design lets you swap modules later without rewriting the physical connections.
- Physical Interfacing: Each channel supports three electrical standards : 1.RS-232: Ideal for point-to-point, short-range connections (under 15 meters). 2.RS-422: Ideal for longer-distance, four-wire differential communication. 3.RS-485: Ideal for multi-drop, two-wire network layouts.
- Supported Systems: The unit functions across standard 1769 backplanes, making it compatible with: 1.CompactLogix 5370 controllers (L1, L2, and L3 platforms). 2.Legacy CompactLogix controllers (1769-L2x and 1769-L3x). 3.MicroLogix 1500 controller bases.
