Features:
- Central Controller for CompactLogix System Architecture and I/O Bus Management
- Scalable Processing Power Supporting Up to 16 Local 1769 I/O Modules
- Integrated Communication and Control Executing Across Up to 3 I/O Banks
The Allen-Bradley 1769-L30 CompactLogix Controller operates as the primary processing hub in a CompactLogix system, providing centralized logic control, execution, and data management for industrial automation routines. It continuously manages real-time tasks and coordinates signaling across the 1769 Compact I/O backplane to support steady-state operation of attached digital, analog, and specialty modules. Reliable local bus communication is built directly into the 1769-L30, enabling fast, deterministically controlled I/O scans. The 1769-L30 delivers significant processing and memory performance over earlier legacy controllers while maintaining standard modular integration within small-to-midsize machine layouts.
The Allen-Bradley 1769-L30 provides essential control functions common to the entire local assembly, serving as the critical intelligence node that directly affects the proper, normal operation of the overall automation cell. Exactly one controller is allowed per CompactLogix system. To ensure correct system topology and backplane signaling, the 1769-L30 is always located in the far-left position (the left-most module slot in the main rack). Furthermore, the 1769-L30 must be installed within four module positions of the system power supply to satisfy its power supply distance rating requirement.
For multi-bank multi-module applications, the CompactLogix System allows expansion using the Allen-Bradley 1769-L30 up to a maximum of 16 I/O modules distributed across up to 3 I/O banks (utilizing up to two 1769 expansion cables). In addition to single-bank operation, each additional I/O bank requires its own dedicated 1769 power supply to maintain adequate backplane power distribution.
The 1769-L30 Allen-Bradley CompactLogix Controller may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

- Water & Wastewater Control: Deployed in remote pumping stations and treatment setups utilizing distributed EtherNet/IP networks.
- Mining Operations: The specialized 1769-L30ER-NSE variant is engineered for mining environments where residual stored energy must be quickly depleted.
- Integrated Safety: The GuardLogix 1769-L30ERMS variant manages safety-critical automation up to SIL 3/PLe standards.
- Operating Temperature: 0 °C to 60 °C (32 °F to 140 °F).
- Storage Temperature: -40 °C to 85 °C (-40 °F to 185 °F).
- Relative Humidity: 5% to 95% non-condensing.
- Vibration Resistance: Designed to withstand continuous physical vibrations ranging from 10 to 500 Hz.
- Enclosure Requirements: Must be installed in an enclosure providing at least IP54 protection, especially when deployed in Zone 2 hazardous environments.
- Physical Mounting: Supports panel mounting or standard DIN rail mounting. It must always serve as the leftmost module in the hardware stack.
- Power Supply Distance: The controller must be installed within 4 module slots of the 1769 power supply to ensure stable backplane current.
- Local I/O Capacity: While the legacy 1769-L30 supported up to 16 local modules across multiple banks, the modern 1769-L30ER supports up to 8 local expansion modules on a single backplane.
- Bus Termination: A right end cap terminator (such as the 1769-ECR) is strictly required at the far end of the local I/O bank to close the passive backplane bus loop.
- Network & Programming: Legacy units use RS-232 serial channels, while modern models feature dual EtherNet/IP ports supporting linear or Device Level Ring (DLR) network topologies. Configuration is done via USB or Ethernet using Studio 5000 Logix Designer or RSLogix 5000 software.
