Features:

  • Directly switches industrial AC loads (contactors, solenoids, pilot lights) without external interposing relays; silent, wear‑free switching.
  • This compact footprint is achieved by the FLEX I/O system’s modular design, which separates the I/O module from the terminal base.
  • Operating temperature 0-55°C, storage -40-85°C, humidity 95% non-condensing; suitable for demanding factory environments.
The 1794-OM8 provides eight triac-based outputs specifically designed for switching 220V AC loads at 50 Hz. Triacs are semiconductor devices that turn on and off with zero-crossing detection, reducing electrical noise and contact wear. Unlike mechanical relays, triacs have no moving parts, making them ideal for applications requiring frequent switching – such as controlling solenoid valves in packaging machines, cycling pilot lights on control panels, or operating small contactors motor starters.

This compact footprint is achieved by the FLEX I/O system’s modular design, which separates the I/O module from the terminal base. The module itself contains only the electronics; the field wiring connections are made on the terminal base (ordered separately). This allows the 1794-OM8 to be replaced without disconnecting field wires, reducing downtime during maintenance. The low profile (45.7 mm) allows mounting in shallow enclosures. The FLEX I/O system supports up to eight modules per I/O rack, providing dense I/O count in a small area.

The 1794-OM8 is built to withstand typical industrial conditions. It operates reliably in ambient temperatures from 0°C to 55°C (32°F to 131°F), covering most unairconditioned control rooms and factory floors. For storage or transportation, it withstands -40°C to 85°C (-40°F to 185°F), allowing the module to be kept in warehouses or shipped without damage. The humidity rating is 95% non-condensing, meaning the module can be installed in high-moisture environments such as pulp and paper mills, food processing plants, or outdoor enclosures – as long as condensation does not occur. The module has an open-style enclosure (IP20) and must be installed inside a suitable cabinet. The 1794-OM8 is not suitable for safety functions (no SIL/PL rating) and should not be used in emergency stop circuits or safety interlocks.

The 1794-OM8 Allen-Bradley I/O Digital Output Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL)by the manufacturer (OEM).

  • AC Load Control: Directly drives small AC motor starters, AC solenoid valves, contactor coils, and various AC indicator lights.
  • Power and Facility Automation: Commonly used in building automation or power distribution systems to handle discrete control signals up to 120V AC.
  • Remote I/O Stations: Provides localized AC power output capabilities remotely from the main control cabinet via the FLEX I/O platform, reducing the need for long-distance high-power AC cable laying.
  • Safety Certifications: UL Listed (USA) and CSA Certified (Canada) certified.
  • Electromagnetic Compatibility and Compliance: CE marked, compliant with the EU Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive and Low Voltage Directive; also C-Tick (Australia) certified.
  • Environmental Compliance: RoHS compliant, restricting the use of hazardous substances.
  • Hazardous Locations: Approved for use in Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C, and D hazardous environments.
  • Dock Compatibility: Requires specific FLEX I/O terminal blocks. A three-wire dock (e.g., 1794-TBN or 1794-TB3) is recommended to simplify L2/Neutral wiring.
  • System Compatibility: Fully compatible with Allen-Bradley's full range of controllers (e.g., ControlLogix, CompactLogix, PLC-5, and SLC 500) and easily configured in Studio 5000 or RSLogix 500 software.
  • Hot-swappable (RIUP): Supports replacement without interrupting system operation, which is consistent with other FLEX I/O modules.
Description
The 1794-OM8 is a FLEX I/O digital output module from Rockwell Automation. It provides 8 triac outputs for switching AC loads at 220V, 50 Hz. The module is part of the FLEX I/O system, which offers a flexible, modular, and cost‑effective solution for industrial automation.

When using the 1794-OM8, engineers can control AC devices such as contactors, solenoids, pilot lights, and small motors directly from the I/O system. The triac outputs are suitable for applications requiring frequent switching with no mechanical wear. The module has no internal isolation between channels and is not suitable for safety functions. Operating temperature is 0 to 55°C, with storage from -40 to 85°C.

The 1794-OM8 has a non-condensing humidity rating of 95% maximum. It is designed for use with the FLEX I/O backplane and requires a compatible terminal base (sold separately). The module does not have built-in short-circuit protection; external fusing is recommended. The module is classified as existing product status and is widely available as a spare part.

For legacy FLEX I/O system expansions or repairs, the 1794-OM8 provides a reliable 8-point AC output solution. It is part of a modular I/O family that includes digital, analog, HART, and specialty I/O with 4 to 32 points per module. The space-saving design supports up to eight modules per system. Always verify that the AC supply matches the module’s 220V, 50 Hz specification before use.

Technical notes
The 1794-OM8 uses triac outputs, which are ideal for switching AC loads but have a leakage current when “off.” Ensure that the connected load draws enough current (typically >10 mA) to prevent false activation due to this leakage. For very high-impedance loads, a bleeder resistor may be required.
