More Information

Overview Manuals Rack Image Mapping RIO Link Setup Restart Behavior Product Applications

Features:

  • Remote chassis adapter: links SLC 500 I/O to a Universal Remote I/O scanner
  • Configurable rack image: supports 2–32 logical groups in two-group steps
  • Extended-node capability: participates in the documented 82 Ω network design
1747-ASB gives a remote SLC chassis a defined logical presence on an established RIO link.

Its identity is inseparable from the DIP-switch settings that determine addressing, image size, and recovery behavior.

Selection therefore depends on the scanner plan and installed rack map rather than communication rate alone.
Apter Power can review 1747-ASB Series, switch record, RIO image, official documentation, condition, and quotation requirements.

  • Starting address: retain the logical rack and group assigned by the scanner
  • Image size: reserve only the groups required by the installed chassis
  • Specialty I/O: distinguish discrete and block-transfer mapping before changing the addressing mode
  • Common rate: configure every scanner and adapter for the same Kbaud value
  • Cable limit: match total Belden 9463 length to the selected rate
  • Termination plan: use the resistor value required by the complete node population
  • Output response: document hold-last-state selection for loss of RIO communication
  • Restart lockout: decide whether restored links resume automatically or await operator action
  • Status proof: interpret the display and COMM/FAULT LEDs before enabling remote outputs
  • Remote SLC I/O chassis: extend discrete and specialty I/O over an installed RIO link
  • Legacy plant distribution: retain rack-based communication between a central scanner and remote panels
  • Chassis modernization boundary: preserve the logical image while individual remote modules are serviced
Description
Remote SLC 500 chassis are placed on a Universal Remote I/O link by 1747-ASB. The adapter converts the selected rack and group image into local backplane transfers and can control as many as 30 slots across a supported chassis arrangement.

DIP switches define the starting logical rack, group, image size, communication rate, addressing mode, and output response for 1747-ASB. Its extended-node capability supports the documented RIO termination strategy when every device on the link meets the same network requirement.

Commissioning 1747-ASB requires the scanner configuration and physical switch record to agree. Preserve the rack image, primary or complementary role, hold-last-state choice, restart-lockout behavior, cable length, resistor selection, and specialty-I/O mapping before a remote chassis is energized.

Technical notes
1747-ASB image size is configurable from 2 to 32 logical groups, so a mechanically correct replacement can still map the wrong remote words. Compare all three DIP-switch banks with the scanner rack definition before start-up, and stop if the selected image crosses an unintended logical-rack boundary.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
Why can 1747-ASB communicate yet place remote I/O in the wrong processor words?
The adapter's starting rack, group, image size, or addressing mode does not match the scanner definition. Communication health alone cannot prove a correct image map.
How should the terminating resistor for 1747-ASB be selected?
Base it on the link rate and whether every network device supports extended-node operation. One incompatible adapter changes the approved resistor and node-count design for the entire trunk.
What does hold-last-state mean during a 1747-ASB link loss?
It determines whether mapped discrete outputs retain their last command for specified communication-loss conditions. The plant safety analysis must establish the required response before the switch is set.
Why might a specialty module behind 1747-ASB fail while discrete I/O remains healthy?
Its data may require block-transfer support or a different mapping mode. Check the scanner capability and the specialty-module mapping rules rather than treating the whole remote rack as discrete I/O.
What should be captured before replacing 1747-ASB in a running remote chassis?
Photograph the three switch banks and record rack/group address, image size, rate, primary/complementary role, recovery settings, cable, resistor, and scanner configuration.
Can 1747-ASB be added to any existing Universal Remote I/O link?
Only after the scanner, logical-rack capacity, cable length, rate, termination, and all adapters are shown to support the proposed node. Physical connection does not establish system compatibility.
