More Information

Overview Manuals Sinking Input Wiring Leakage Diagnosis Terminal Handover Product Applications

Features:

  • Sixteen DC inputs: consolidates discrete sensors in one SLC slot
  • Sinking interface: requires the documented complementary field-device polarity
  • Single common: all 16 channels share one field reference group
1746-IB16 provides a dense 16-point DC input interface for a modular SLC 500 chassis.

Its sinking topology and one-common construction place field polarity ahead of software diagnosis.

The documented off-state and delay limits help separate real field changes from leakage or transient behavior.
Apter Power can review 1746-IB16 Series, terminal block, input polarity, official documentation, condition, and sourcing scope.

  • Sensor polarity: pair the module with a compatible sourcing field output
  • Common reference: verify the shared return before landing any channel
  • Point map: label each conductor against the controller input address
  • Off-state limit: measure residual current when a field device should be open
  • False-on split: compare terminal voltage, channel LED, and input image
  • Corrective path: resolve sensor, wiring, or reference leakage before editing logic
  • Block identity: retain the approved removable terminal block and keying
  • Torque record: inspect conductor preparation and tighten to official requirements
  • Staged test: stimulate each sensor once and confirm the intended program address
  • Proximity and limit sensing: collect compatible 24 V DC machine-state signals
  • Panel pushbuttons: monitor discrete operator commands with a shared DC reference
  • Auxiliary status: bring relay or solid-state indications into an SLC 500 controller
Description
Sixteen field signals enter an SLC 500 chassis through 1746-IB16, a 10–30 V DC sinking input module with all points assigned to one common group. The module draws 0.050 A from the 5 V DC backplane supply.

Each channel of 1746-IB16 is designed for DC sensing with an 8 mA nominal input at 24 V DC and documented on and off delays of up to 8 ms. The single-common arrangement makes field reference and polarity central to the wiring plan.

Retrofit work involving 1746-IB16 should preserve the terminal-block identity, point-to-wire map, DC supply reference, sensor output type, leakage-current margin, and chassis slot. A lit input indicator should be reconciled with the controller input image and field voltage before a channel is accepted.

Technical notes
1746-IB16 is a sinking input module with all 16 points tied to one common. Confirm that field sensors provide the complementary sourcing output and that off-state leakage stays below the documented 1 mA limit; a polarity or common-reference error can affect an entire group even when individual wiring appears correct.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
Why does 1746-IB16 show several active inputs after one field supply is changed?
All points share one common, so a reference or polarity error can affect the group. Check common voltage, sensor type, leakage paths, and each field return before investigating ladder logic.
How can a false input on 1746-IB16 be separated from an internal module fault?
Measure the terminal voltage and off-state current, compare the channel LED with the input image, then disconnect the field conductor under the approved procedure. The result isolates wiring and sensor effects.
Which sensor output type should be paired with 1746-IB16?
Use a field device whose output is compatible with a sinking PLC input, normally a sourcing DC output. Confirm the official sensor and module wiring diagrams rather than relying on wire color.
What should be tested after the terminal block is moved to 1746-IB16?
Check keying, common polarity, conductor torque, supply voltage, and every point from physical actuation through the input image and dependent program condition.
Can 1746-IB16 detect very short pulses reliably?
The documented input delay can filter brief events. Compare the real pulse width with the on/off response and use a faster or dedicated counting solution when the event is shorter.
What information should accompany an order for 1746-IB16?
Provide the complete catalog, Series, quantity, condition, destination, required terminal block, delivery date, field voltage, sensor polarity, and clear label and connector photographs.
