Features:
- A twelve-amp regulated output supports Series Five racks with heavier internal module demand.
- The AC input range is selected by a visible terminal jumper rather than an internal adjustment.
- Separate PWR and RUN indications distinguish supply availability from processor operating state.
IC655PWR501 is primarily a rack-capacity decision: its twelve-amp output provides margin for module combinations that exceed the smaller AC supply, but unused current capacity does not change individual module requirements.
Upstream protection must account for the supply's input burden and startup surge as well as the steady backplane total, especially where several control racks share one cabinet branch.
Separate power and run indications help distinguish an energized supply from a processor that is actually executing, preventing a healthy input feed from being mistaken for a healthy control state.

Positioning the twelve-amp supply in a Series Five base
- Dedicated location: IC655PWR501 mounts at the far left, where its rear connector feeds the base-unit power conductors.
- CPU base: Processor and local I/O demand are totaled against this supply when the base is configured as the controller rack.
- Expansion base: A separate IC655PWR501 may serve an added I/O base whose installed modules require the higher current capacity.
- Growth decision: If the calculated demand exceeds the available twelve amps, the design must distribute modules among additional powered bases rather than overload one rack.
Maintaining airflow around a higher-load rack supply
- Intake limit: Air entering the modules must remain at or below 60 °C throughout operation.
- Natural cooling: The base dissipates heat by convection, so blocked openings can undermine cooling even though no fan is required.
- Vertical clearance: Leaving 50 mm above and below the base gives warm air a path away from the supply and adjacent modules.
- Rack spacing: Multiple horizontal bases need separation and clear sides so heat removal does not conflict with module access.
Separating power health from controller operation
- PWR on: A lit green indicator confirms that incoming AC is present and the regulated +5 VDC output has reached its usable level.
- PWR off: An extinguished lamp can reflect loss of the branch source or a low internal output, so both sides of the conversion path require attention.
- RUN transition: The relay contacts change only with processor RUN state, providing a status channel independent of the front power lamp.
- External visibility: Connecting a rated annunciator to those isolated contacts lets operators recognize a stopped CPU from outside the enclosure.
Protecting the high-capacity AC input path
- Branch design: Upstream protection must carry the normal input load while riding through the brief starting current specified for IC655PWR501.
- Internal fuse: The approved 3.15 A, 250 V normal-blow device protects this twelve-amp version and must not be confused with the smaller supply's rating.
- Voltage choice: Energization is safe only after the bottom-terminal jumper arrangement agrees with the actual 115 or 230 VAC source.
- Terminal access: De-energize the branch before removing the cover because hazardous voltage can remain on the hot, neutral, and selection connections.
