Features:
- Employs a 2oo3 (two-out-of-three) voting scheme across three independent channels for each of the 40 outputs, ensuring no single point of failure can disrupt critical control
- Provides 40 independent 4-20mA outputs configured in 5 isolated power groups of 8 channels each, maximizing I/O density for large-scale safety systems
- Features automatic per-channel line monitoring for open/short circuit detection, plus onboard 1 ms Sequence of Events (SOE) reporting for precise fault time-stamping
The T8480 is built upon the Trusted TMR architecture, where three independent, isolated hardware channels process every analog output signal in parallel. A hardware-based 2oo3 (two-out-of-three) voter compares the outputs from these three channels. If all three agree, the correct 4-20mA signal is sent to the field device (e.g., a control valve positioner). If one channel deviates due to drift, component failure, or external interference, the voter accepts the value from the two agreeing channels and flags the third as faulty. This design ensures that a single-point failure—or even two simultaneous failures in a degraded mode—cannot force an incorrect output value onto the field.
The T8480 delivers 40 independent analog output channels in a single 6U module, offering exceptional channel density for space-constrained safety cabinets. These 40 channels are organized into five isolated Power Groups (PGs), each containing 8 channels. This grouping allows a single T8480 to interface with field devices operating from different power sources or to isolate a fault in one group from affecting others. Each channel provides a calibrated 4-20 mA output (also configurable for 0-20 mA) with ±0.1% full-scale accuracy at 25°C and ±0.25% overall accuracy from 0°C to 60°C.
The T8480 incorporates extensive onboard diagnostics that continuously monitor the health of each output channel and the connected field wiring without interrupting normal operation. Automatic line monitoring detects open-circuit conditions (broken wires) and short circuits between conductors or to ground, immediately reporting the fault to the safety logic solver. This allows maintenance to be scheduled before the fault affects a safety function. Additionally, the module features onboard Sequence of Events (SOE) reporting with 1 ms resolution and ±10 ms timestamp accuracy.
The T8480 ICS Triplex Analog Output Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond

- Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS): Drives critical final control elements, such as modulating control valves and actuators, ensuring a safe state response.
- Emergency Shutdown Systems (ESD): Used in oil & gas, petrochemical, and refining industries to command critical isolation and emergency valves.
- Fire and Gas Systems (F&G / FAS): Controls field notification appliances, acoustic-optic alarms, and deluge system fire-water valves.
- Critical Process Control: Regulates steam/gas turbines, large compressors, boiler feed pumps, and high-availability continuous manufacturing operations.
- TMR and Internal Voting: The module consists of three fully isolated hardware channels (Slices A, B, and C). The internal processors vote on data dynamically. If a single channel fails, it is automatically isolated while the remaining two channels sustain uninterrupted output (high availability).
- Line and Field Monitoring: Automatically scans each channel in real-time to detect Open Circuit and Short Circuit faults in the field wiring.
- Automatic Feedback Self-Test: Utilizes internal high-precision Analogue-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) to cross-check the actual output current flowing to the field against the demanded value.
- Electrostatic Discharge (ESD): The module contains highly sensitive electronics. Always wear a grounded ESD wrist strap before handling the unit. Never touch the rear connector pins directly.
- Pin Inspection: Before insertion, visually inspect the module casing and look for any bent pins on the rear I/O connectors. Do not attempt to force a module with bent pins into the chassis slot.
- Use the designated mechanical Release Key to unlock the Ejector Tabs on the front panel. Ensure the tabs are fully pulled open.
