Features:
- The T8901 provides the interface between the main Trusted Controller and remote I/O chassis, offering data transfer rates of up to 250 Mbps via the Expander Bus to ensure real-time synchronization
- It is built with Hardware-Implemented Fault Tolerance (HIFT). The module supports 3-2-0 redundancy, preventing a single component failure from interrupting communication to the expansion chassis
- Equipped with diagnostic LEDs that provide immediate visual feedback: a steady green light indicates a healthy slice or connection, while a flashing red light indicates a fault or transmission error on the corresponding channel
The T8901 is the backbone for expanding the physical I/O capacity of a Trusted safety system. It serves as the dedicated Expander Interface Module, located in the processor slot of the expansion chassis . When a standard chassis does not provide enough slots for I/O modules, the system designer uses the T8901 to link a secondary "Expander Chassis" back to the main "Controller Chassis." This connection utilizes a high-performance Expander Bus that achieves data transfer rates of up to 250 Mbps .
Reliability is the cornerstone of the T8901, achieved through Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR). Inside the module, critical circuits are triplicated . These three channels process the same data simultaneously and vote on the output. The module employs Hardware-Implemented Fault Tolerance (HIFT), which allows it to handle single-point hardware failures autonomously. For instance, if a communication driver on one channel fails, the T8901 automatically detects the discrepancy and votes out the faulty channel, while the remaining two channels maintain the link to the expansion chassis .
The T8901 is designed for easy maintenance in live industrial environments. The front panel is equipped with a series of LED indicators that provide a clear, real-time window into the health of the module . Operators can see at a glance if the module is in Active mode, if the channels are healthy (Steady Green), or if a fault has been detected (Flashing Red). Furthermore, the T8901 supports Smart Slot technology .
The T8901 ICS TRIPLEX Interface Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond
End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

- Distributed Process Safety Systems: Used when safety I/O modules span multiple cabinets or control rooms across a plant, linking local and remote expander chassis.
- Emergency Shutdown (ESD) Systems: Deployed in large-scale upstream oil and gas production platforms, refineries, and chemical facilities to ensure unified, zero-latency safety execution across a massive I/O footprint.
- Fire & Gas (F&G) Protection Networks: Connects main logic solvers to distant I/O chassis managing safety zone field actuators, detectors, and sub-stations.
- Chassis-to-Chassis Extension: Resides in the dedicated processor slots of a Trusted Expander Chassis, functioning as the "slave" interface to the primary host processor chassis.
- Expander Bus Architecture: Utilizes standard Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) copper cabling to distribute the high-speed Inter-Module Bus (IMB) between separated chassis.
- Hardware-Implemented Fault Tolerance (HIFT): Incorporates dedicated TMR voting logic at the bus interface. It validates and votes data 2oo3 (Two-Out-Of-Three) to prevent transient, intermittent, or permanent bus communication faults from propagating.
- Functional Safety Certification: Fully TÜV Certified up to IEC 61508 SIL 3 (Safety Integrity Level 3) capabilities when deployed in a valid Trusted TMR safety configuration.
- Fault Containment Regions (FCR): Designed with strict physical and electrical isolation boundaries. An internal hardware failure within the T8901 is localized, preventing common-cause failures from taking down the expander chassis backplane or the wider system.
- Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC): Compliant with industrial emissions and immunity standard EN 61000-6-4 as well as the Radiocommunications Standard (e.g., RCM compliance), making it highly resistant to harsh electrical noise generated by industrial switchgear.
