Features:
- Digital Output Interface Between the TRICON Safety System and Field Devices
- Integrates 24 VDC Signal Driving with Triple Modular Redundant Channel Protection
- Functions Within Standard TRICON Chassis Architectures for Critical Control Applications
The TRICONEX 3604E serves as the Digital Output Module in a TRICON safety instrumented system, delivering reliable 24 VDC control signals to sixteen independent field device circuits. It continuously processes high-integrity output commands from the triple modular redundant processors and converts these logic states into switched 24 VDC outputs capable of driving solenoids, relays, and indicating devices. Seamless output continuity is inherent with the 3604E, however utilizing the built-in TMR voting architecture ensures that individual channel failures do not result in dangerous output states or spurious shutdowns. The 3604E has made improvements in channel isolation and diagnostic capability over previous digital output designs, while incorporating non-commoned output configurations that eliminate ground loop concerns within the TRICON rack.
The 3604E provides essential output driving functions essential to the entire safety system, and is a critical component of the emergency shutdown path, directly affecting the proper, protective operation of the overall control architecture. One or multiple 3604E modules are required per rack depending on the discrete output count and redundancy requirements. The 3604E occupies only a single slot in the chassis and may be located in any available I/O slot position, communicating with the main processors through the high-speed TriBus backplane interface.
For Triple Modular Redundant applications, the 3604E utilizes three independent output circuits per channel, each associated with a separate processor leg. In addition to standard digital output operation, the TMR configuration also performs continuous diagnostic voting. The 3604E redundant architecture executes output decisions using the internal voter circuitry specified in the module design. Using this method, the 3604E continually monitors the health of all three output paths on every channel. If the module detects that one output circuit disagrees with the other two (outside configured voltage/tolerance levels), it will automatically continue operation with the majority vote state, flag the discrepancy for maintenance, and place a diagnostic event in the System Event List.
The 3604E TRICONEX Digital Output Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).
