Overview Manuals Sensor Inputs RTD Banks Data Highway Mounting & Safety

Features:

  • Up to sixteen thermocouple or millivolt signals, or fifteen RTDs, share one hazardous-area transmitter.
  • Two redundant twisted-pair highways carry both operating power and multiplexed measurements toward the safe area.
  • The MTL838B-MBF receiver converts field measurements and status into Modbus serial data.
Eaton MTL831B concentrates low-level sensor signals before they cross the hazardous-area boundary.

The two highway pairs of MTL831B provide independent routes between the field transmitter and safe-area receiver.

RTD bank switches on MTL831B align the terminal circuit with two-, three-, or four-wire sensors.

The Eaton MTL831B Intrinsically Safe Analogue Multiplexer Transmitter may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

Thermocouple, Millivolt and RTD Paths

  • Low-level inputs: Sixteen positions accept thermocouple, millivolt, or supported potentiometer signals.
  • RTD capacity: Fifteen positions accept two-, three-, or four-wire resistance sensors.
  • Mixed measurement: Thermocouple and RTD measurements may share the transmitter under the documented terminal rules.
  • Terminal groups: Sensor terminals I1 through I16 remain separate from the highway and excitation connections.

Wiring Mode and Excitation Chain

  • Bank division: RTD inputs are grouped as I1–I7 and I8–I15.
  • Mode switch: Each bank is configured for three-wire mode or combined two-/four-wire mode.
  • Mixing limit: Three-wire RTDs are not mixed with two- or four-wire RTDs in one bank without compensation.
  • Open circuit effect: A break in the series excitation path can stop every RTD connected to that path.

Powered Measurement Transfer

  • Dual routes: H1 and H2 provide two redundant highway connections.
  • Combined path: Each twisted pair carries transmitter power and multiplexed data.
  • Receiver role: MTL838B-MBF converts the received channels and status to Modbus serial data.
  • Isolation boundary: An MTL3052 protects each highway where a hazardous-area transmitter connects to the safe area.

Hazardous-Area Installation

  • Location: The transmitter is approved for the documented Zone 0 or Class I, Division 1 application.
  • Rail option: The base clips attach to standard 35 mm DIN46277 T-section rail.
  • Surface option: The adjustable base clips support flat-surface mounting with three fasteners.
  • Enclosure option: ENC8 and ENC83 variants add the specified IP67 enclosure protection for exposed locations.
Description
Eaton MTL831B is an intrinsically safe analogue multiplexer transmitter for the MTL830 system. It gathers up to sixteen thermocouple or millivolt inputs, or up to fifteen RTD inputs, and moves their measurement data from the hazardous area to a safe-area receiver.

Two data-highway outputs on MTL831B carry both communication and operating power over twisted-pair cable. At the safe-area end, an MTL838B-MBF receiver converts the transmitted measurements and status into Modbus serial data.

RTD terminals on MTL831B are divided into banks I1–I7 and I8–I15. Each bank is set for three-wire mode or two-/four-wire mode, so three-wire devices cannot be mixed with two- or four-wire devices inside the same bank without the documented compensation arrangement.

For hazardous-area mounting, MTL831B uses an MTL3052 digital isolator on each highway in the safe area. The transmitter mounts on 35 mm T-section DIN rail or a flat surface, and ENC8 or ENC83 enclosures add the specified outdoor protection.

Technical notes
Dual highways let MTL831B share power and measurement data with the receiver, while RTD bank mode determines which sensor wiring can coexist.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
Why can one failed RTD stop several readings on MTL831B?
The MTL831B RTD excitation circuit is wired as a shared chain, so an open circuit can interrupt excitation for every sensor on that path.
Why must RTD wiring mode be checked before commissioning MTL831B?
Each MTL831B bank must match its two-/four-wire or three-wire sensor arrangement; an incorrect switch setting introduces measurement errors or unusable channels.
What should be checked when only one data highway of MTL831B communicates?
Inspect the MTL831B H1/H2 polarity, twisted-pair continuity, MTL3052 isolator, receiver channel, cable length, and address configuration for the failed route.
How does MTL831B deliver measurements without a local hazardous-area power supply?
The MTL831B receives operating power through the same data-highway pair that carries multiplexed signals back to the safe-area receiver.
What must be matched before replacing an MTL831B transmitter?
Confirm the MTL831B input types, RTD bank modes, transmitter address, H1/H2 wiring, isolators, receiver mapping, and hazardous-area installation records.
Why can a thermocouple reading on MTL831B become unstable after rewiring?
Check MTL831B thermocouple polarity, cable type, screen grounding, terminal tightness, common noise, and separation from the data-highway wiring.
