Features:
- Twelve independent SSI axes can be acquired by one WF705 module.
- Direct encoder wiring and three-channel actual-value distributors can be combined within one installation.
- Cable-break and short-circuit monitoring identify faults in the encoder signal path.
The WF705 receives absolute Gray-code words from serial encoders and makes the converted positions available in the PLC peripheral area.
A directly wired encoder receives its 24 V DC feed through the module, while distributor-fed groups use the external distributor supply path.
Transfer rate, cable length, module address and encoder resolution are configured together so each axis is read into the intended PLC data location.
The Siemens 6FM1705-3AA00 WF705 Position Decoder Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

Routing direct and distributed SSI signals
- Direct connection: An SSI encoder can connect to the WF705 while receiving its 24 V DC supply from the module.
- Distributed group: One actual-value distributor carries clock and data for as many as three encoders.
- Mixed arrangement: Direct and distributor-fed encoders can share one module when their supplies use the required common ground.
- Axis capacity: The complete arrangement cannot exceed the twelve independent axis channels handled by the WF705.
Placing the WF705 in the S5 peripheral area
- Address width: Each module reserves four consecutive bytes in the peripheral address space.
- Start value: The starting address is selected from PB 4 through PB 252 and must be divisible by four.
- Rack position: Supported central and extension-unit slots must be chosen without exceeding the rack power-supply capacity.
- Remote limit: The WF705 is not assigned to remote-linked extension racks using IM 308 or IM 318.
Turning SSI words into PLC position values
- Encoder word: Each SSI encoder sends a 25-bit Gray-code absolute position word.
- Module output: The WF705 converts that word and transfers the position to SIMATIC in dual format.
- Resolution setting: The configured steps per revolution must correspond to the programmed encoder resolution.
- PLC storage: Requested axis values are placed in the assigned data-block locations for the user program.
Relating rate, distance and fault checks
- Fast link: A one-megabit-per-second SSI rate is assigned to cable runs no longer than 25 m.
- Extended link: The 125-kilobit-per-second setting permits the documented 120 m maximum path.
- Signal faults: Cable-break and short-circuit monitoring detect an interrupted or invalid encoder connection.
- Commissioning check: If an axis does not update, compare its request, connector wiring, supply and configured BAUD value.
