Features:
- Two independent SIMOLINK fiber-optic paths are available through X2/X3 and X4/X5.
- The LE bus carries data between the expansion and FM 458-1 DP modules.
- A MASTERDRIVES option connector is provided with a defined second-channel limitation.
Siemens 6DD1607-0EA2 extends an FM 458-1 DP application module with two onboard SIMOLINK interfaces.
The first and second optical pairs on 6DD1607-0EA2 can be assigned to master or slave communication according to the configured SIMOLINK network.
When an option module occupies its carrier connector, 6DD1607-0EA2 automatically disables X4/X5 while retaining the first SIMOLINK path.
The Siemens 6DD1607-0EA2 EXM 448-2 Communications Expansion Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

How the two optical channels are assigned
- First channel: X2 sends and X3 receives SIMOLINK optical data.
- Second channel: X4 and X5 provide the equivalent transmit and receive path.
- Master operation: A configured channel can coordinate a SIMOLINK ring with up to 200 MASTERDRIVES nodes.
- Slave operation: The interface can instead provide fast coupling to SIMADYN D or another FM 458-1 DP.
What changes when the carrier connector is occupied
- Carrier function: The front connector accepts an additional MASTERDRIVES option module.
- Channel consequence: Installing that option automatically disables the X4/X5 SIMOLINK interface.
- Remaining path: X2/X3 continues as the available onboard optical channel.
- Planning point: Port allocation must be decided before the option module and fiber routes are assigned.
Separate routes for internal data and module supply
- LE bus: This local expansion bus transfers data between 6DD1607-0EA2 and the FM 458-1 DP.
- P bus: The parallel S7-400 backplane connection supplies power but is not the SIMOLINK data path.
- Module supply: The expansion electronics operate from the 5 V backplane source.
- Assembly order: The EXM module is joined to the FM 458-1 DP before the combined assembly enters the rack.
Indicators and physical limits around the module
- Green indication: The channel reports whether SIMOLINK network data traffic is present.
- Red indication: The channel reports its interface power and operating condition.
- Yellow indication: The module reports transfer status with the FM 458-1 DP basic unit.
- Enclosure requirement: The open-type module belongs inside a closed cabinet or switch room.
