Features:
- Three independent positioning channels control servo or stepper axes from one S7-400 function module.
- Incremental and SSI feedback paths return position information to the assigned channel.
- Per-axis digital inputs and protected outputs exchange limit, enable and status signals.
The FM 453 executes positioning functions between PLC motion jobs and the electrical interfaces of the three connected drives.
A channel is completed by matching its motor command type, encoder signal and digital interlocks to the same axis.
Field-side 24 V DC power and backplane 5 V power serve different parts of the module and must both be present.
The Siemens 6ES7453-3AH00-0AE0 SIMATIC S7-400 FM 453 Positioning Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

Keeping three positioning loops independent
- Channel structure: Every axis receives its own command, feedback and configurable digital I/O resources.
- Servo selection: A servo channel uses the bipolar analog output to command its drive.
- Stepper selection: A stepper channel uses the pulse output instead of the analog command.
- Feedback pairing: The encoder assigned in the project must physically return to the same axis channel.
Matching feedback format to cable reach
- Incremental input: Symmetrical RS422 feedback supports the highest documented incremental frequency.
- SSI input: Absolute position data can enter through the synchronous serial encoder interface.
- Rate and distance: Permitted cable length changes with encoder current and transmission speed.
- Supply output: The selected 5 V or 24 V encoder supply must match the feedback device.
Sending motion commands to two drive types
- Analog command: Servo positioning uses a ±10 V path with the stated current limit.
- Pulse command: Stepper positioning is generated through the documented high-frequency pulse output.
- Wiring reach: Symmetrical and asymmetrical pulse connections have different cable limits.
- Common project: Drive type, scaling and direction are defined for the corresponding axis parameters.
Organizing field signals at the 48-pin interface
- Axis grouping: Encoder, drive and digital I/O conductors remain grouped by channel.
- Input role: The six configurable inputs per axis receive assigned positioning conditions.
- Output role: Four protected outputs per axis return configured drive or process signals.
- Supply check: Field power polarity and common references must follow the connector assignment.
